Triple Sunbeam Alpine Barn Find

3-sunbeam-alpines

The Sunbeam Alpine might not have the performance or desirability of its V8 powered sibling, but the Alpine’s lower weight makes it a fun and nimble car to drive. As more and more are turned into Tiger clones, untouched Alpines are going up in value. The seller of these three Alpines discovered them hiding in this old barn and is now selling them as a lot here on eBay. They are all in rough shape, but their asking price seems reasonable.

The previous owner has a number of other cars parked in their barn, but is apparently reluctant to sell them. After somehow convincing the owner to sell these cars, the new owner pulled them from the barn, took them home, and cleaned them up. The red and orange cars cleaned up well and while they need considerable work, they look complete and it shouldn’t be too difficult to get them back on the road. The other Alpine would be what most people would consider a parts car, but it looks solid enough that it might be worth restoring.

We hope the next owner will restore all three, but we understand if they part out the one above. While we aren’t huge fans of seeing these turned into Tiger clones, we would rather see this one turned into a clone then to be scrapped. If they were in your barn, what would you do with them?

      Sorry about that chief…

These look like a pre 260/289 body. Prettier than an MGB, though.

Turning them into a Tiger clone is the same as turning that Mustang in the background into a Shelby clone. When done, all you have is a fake car that is not worth anywhere near an original Tiger or Shelby. Restore them as what they are, Alpines.

Perhaps the lowest priority for a prospective buyer: “Gas mileage is 29 freeway.” May at least one of these live to demonstrate this claim.
I believe Don Andreina is correct. All the Tigers had the later body (Series 3 starting in 1963 I think) with the smaller tail fins.

Yep, these are the pre-Tiger bodies. Don’t know if a SBF would fit in there. Might make a nice new home for an S2000 engine though!!

NONE OF THEM SHOULD BE PARTED OUT. DEPENDING ON HOW DEEP THE GUYS POCKETS ARE I WOULD BRING ONE BACK TO ALL ORIGINAL ANOTHER I WOULD PUT IN THE FORD SMALL BLOCK HOPEFULLY A 289 HO AND THE LAST I WOULD MAKE A STARTER CAR FOR ONE OF THE KIDS.NOTHING TOO FAST BUT GOOD RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION. I THINK THE KIDS MIGHT NOT LIKE IT CAUSE IT ONLY SEATS TWO BUT THEY WILL GET OVER IT.

$2,500 to open bidding for 3 Alpines is a pretty fair offer, especially when 2 of the cars are complete, or nearly so. I hope someone who really likes Alpines, and has the space for them, ends up happy with them. But I’m guessing that someone who doesn’t already like Alpines isn’t going to want to buy 3 of them just because Liz Taylor drove one in a movie.

Keep the best of everything for the restoration, keep the 2 best as spares & sell off the balance. Me, I’d look to a modern 4 cyl or V6 with matching 5 speed, & do nothing that wasn’t reverseable.

I do indeed like finned Alpines. For a hobby guy on a budget, Alpines are just dandy. They are built well and can be made to get along at a nice clip, especially with an overdrive.
Parts are available so that is not a problem. Now, if you find and aluminum factory top with your finned Alpine…….bam !!! golden.

The “Bond Alpine” is yet to found………..so if any of you know it’s whereabouts let’s have it.

      Did it leave Jamaica?

I know one of the OHMSS Aston DBS landed here in Australia. Still here.

I’m with rancho bella, gotta love the finned Alpines. No question, one beautiful car could be made out of these three and the price is right. The downside? Buying, transporting and storing 3 Alpines while trying to figure out how to put one all together. For the right buyer, a dream come true but forget the Tiger fantasy. A perfect, period Alpine has a classy British snobbiness all it’s own.

What a great find. You hear about finds like this but its difficult to find them without the owner exploiting the fact they are barn finds and no longer a great deal. This seller appears to be getting rid of all of them and not taking advantage of the fact they are unmolested relics. Whether enjoyed with a V8 (my choice) or returned to its originality, we appear to have a great opportunity to hone our skills and enjoy something you can’t purchase at the local dealer anymore.

Living in California since 1984, I witnessed government and commercial programs designed to purchase pre-smog era cars in the name of EPA, and send them to the scrap pile. It’s nice to see these were in hiding, and still exist for someone to resurrect. Wow, what an exciting opportunity in my opinion. I’m all in!

Looks like a ’65 full size Merc next to the red one, not a Lincoln

I agree with Fred! Thought not necessarily make an all out clone! I’m not big on making full blown clones! Trying to turn it into something it’s not!! It’s just a lie! If your guna change it, then go all out!!! Me… I’de V-8 one of them! Something more modern and injected! A fox body type 5.0 would be cool or even a high reving 289 with aftermarket injection and aluminum heads for weight!! And for the other, I like the Honda S2000 idea! Would need a turbo though!! Ad of course one restored all original!! It’s the perfect situation! No decision needs to be made!! Lol!! I also like the fact that they are the lager wing style! I just love the look of the cars!! Great lines and there small & lightweight!!
