Turbo Diesel: 1980 International Harvester Scout II

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We rarely see the last year of the International Harvester Scout for sale and when we do it is always exciting to see one that is equipped with a Nissan-built turbo diesel inline six-cylinder engine. This 1980 International Harvester Scout II is located in Puyallup, Washington. It is listed for sale here on eBay with less than 24 hours remaining in the auction. While the reserve has not been met, the Scout is bid to $16,450 and 10 bids. That is way below what this rare 4WD vehicle is worth.

This International Harvester Scout II is equipped with a Nissan-built 198 cubic inch turbocharged diesel inline 6 cylinder. The SD33T six-cylinder diesel engine was rated at 101 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque from the factory. The engine is backed up by a 4-speed manual transmission. The engine compartment looks fairly untouched and original.

This Scout II has a Blue Tartan interior and has been garaged during the seller’s ownership. The first Scout was introduced in 1960 and called the Scout 80. It was manufactured from 1960 to 1965 and was a bare bones 4WD. The next generation of Scout was called the Scout 800 that was produced from 1966 to 1971. The final generation of the Scout was called the Scout II (like this one) and was built from 1971 to 1980. This version of the Scout was much more refined than prior models. This one is well equipped and looks to be in great condition.

This Scout II looks great and the seller has owned it for the past 11 years. The odometer reads just under 75k miles and the SUV is said to run and drive well. A few upgrades have been done including some suspension upgrades and aftermarket bumpers. The ad states that there are some sheet metal issues but the frame is solid. This rare Scout II would draw a lot of attention from enthusiasts that recognize what it is and might have had something similar back in the day.

Seems like 175ft lbs of torque is low for a diesel. Is that correct? That wouldn’t do for towig..

Looks like there’s some serious rust and corrosion going on in passenger floor and tunnel area.
