Like so many other middle-of-the-road classics, the W123-series Mercedes-Benz got a bit of a price bump in recent years thanks to pandemic-era pricing. That trend has leveled off significantly for many of these cars and the W123 is not immune to marketplace cooling. The good news is that you can still own one of the most reliable classic cars out there for reasonable money, as this no-reserve 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300CD coupe here on eBay goes to show, where bidding is just over $6,000 with no reserve.
That’s relatively short money for perhaps the best iteration of a W123: two doors with the turbodiesel inline-five under the hood. Non-turbo diesels are charming but quite slow, to the point that you need to plan your freeway entry carefully. This 300CD also appears to be in excellent cosmetic condition inside and out thanks to its very low mileage of just 42,000 clicks on the clock. The beige interior appears to be in mint condition, and is complete right down to the corresponding floor mats.
That sort of mileage on a car like this effectively makes it “as new” with regards to how long-lived a diesel-powered Mercedes tends to be. These cars rarely pop up for sale with low miles because it’s incredibly easy to rack up hundreds of thousands of miles thanks to its exceedingly composed highway manners and its obvious MPG prowess. The engine bay appears to be as nicely preserved as the rest of the car.
The high-gloss paint finish is a testament to whomever detailed this car, and the same goes for the chrome bumpers and black trim. This W123 is in extremely nice shape on the outside, and if it’s been a life-long Florida car, it was clearly parked indoors for much of that time. You can’t fake details like those that speak to a vehicle’s originality. and for a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast looking for one of the lowest-mileage W123s for sale in two-door form, this 300CD seems like a winner.
Tempting!
Not generally a fan of diesels — including old-school M-B diesels — but the Mercedes coupes of that era are just plain gorgeous, and very nice driving cars. The interiors are wonderful, too. If that’s MB-Tex upholstery, it will last through the next Ice Age.
Assuming it sells for anything like the current bid, I’d call it a bargain.
Interiors are kinda wonderful but are prone to plastic shrinking on the dash and around the window. But, they last forever almost!
I have a 300d 4door. Just have to time your entrances onto highways. With maintenance the diesel will run for ever. Interiors wear like iron.
Details show a MA history and many other states before FL.
I have a 2006 merc 4WD with the 5 cly TD diesel, great truck when it was running. But the injector pump died at 200,000 klm (160k miles) and at 8k for a new injector pump? No way.
Be cautious, that’s all I say.
It’s still sitting in my mums garage.
AD I’m sure you have researched rebuilding the original pump-not possible Im guessing. Had no idea those were so expensive.
They can be rebuilt, but by a specialist, due to timing of the injectors.
I looked into it, but no guarantee that mine is repairable.
I found one on eBay for 10k! Yikes!
Finish on dash appears to be inconsistent as if typical dash cracks have been repaired
Looks to be a dash cap based upon wavy area around defrost vents.
Other important things are the door seals around windows (very hard to get) and if the back windows operate correctly.
I saw it supposedly sold on Bring a trailer for 25,500 on 12-23 -2023.
Good catch. Same photos. Prob a misrepresented by the BAT seller.
This auction was removed by EBay.
Must have been a scam.
up to $12,100.00, 1/16/23
Anyone who knows these cars KNOWS if maintained properly…are nearly indestructible. One of the best automobiles ever built. Period.
Nice
