Turbo-Fire 350 V8: 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo represents the first year of production for the first generation of the Monte Carlo. Chevrolet produced 145,976 Monte Carlos in 1970. The design of this personal luxury car was a tremendous hit and very popular. This 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is listed here on eBay with 22 days remaining in the listing. The car is located in Roseville, California. The seller has listed the car at a Buy It Now price of $15,500 but there is no option to make an offer.

This Monte Carlo looks a little rough for the claimed mileage but the seller states that the car is an original 49,000 mile car that was taken off the road in 1978. The Monte Carlo is powered by a 300 horsepower 350 cubic inch V8 engine backed by an automatic transmission. Chevrolet offered three different engine sizes in 1970. The engines included a 250 horsepower and 300 horsepower Turbo-Fire 350 cubic inch V8 engine, a 265 horsepower (Turbo-Fire) and and 330 horsepower (Turbo-Jet) 400 cubic inch V8 and a 360 horsepower Turbo Jet 454 cubic inch V8 engine.

The interior of the car is immaculate. The black vinyl seats, door panels, carpet and dash look to be in excellent condition. The car is said to be rust free with a small area around the back window being repaired by the owner and the driver fender has a small area of rot. The car does run but the seller discloses that it will need work including new valve seals. The interior was originally saddle (brown) but was changed out to black by the seller.

As can be seen in this picture, the hood was replaced with a hood from a 1972 Monte Carlo. The glass and chrome are said to be in good shape. The car rides on Corvette Rally wheels with new tires. A Flowmaster exhaust system replaces the original dual exhaust from the factory. The seller reiterates that his asking price is firm and he is not accepting offers. Is this car worth the asking price?

I really question the mileage. 50k mile small blocks just don’t need valve work, unless they were really thrashed. I’d pass at that price.

I was a HD mechanic from 68 on, and worked at Chevrolet dealers during the 60s and 70s. Even under warrantee, we changed those o-ring valve stem seals like they were going out of style (which they eventually did, when GM started using Perfect Circle type seals). Those o-ring seals were a p***-poor design. We also knurled a lot of valve guides and or replaced valves with oversized stems too due to the phasing out of leaded fuels. Induction hardened valve guides, seats, and valves pretty much cured that anomaly.

The writeup doesn’t say it needs valve work, says valve seals, which would be common on a smallblock chevy thats had 40 plus yrs to dry up from lack of use….as far as the 50k mileage, no idea, thats something that a personal inspection would require….

That clean simple design still looks good today.

Maybe if it had factory a/c. Valve seals were definitely a problem but not a major repair. Started at a Chevrolet dealership in 1970 and saw all the good performance cars. Heavy line techs would get an engine noise in a big block, no problem, put a brick on the accelerator pedal and wait till it blew! They made more money replacing short or long blocks and not get stuck with a comeback if something else went wrong down the road. Covering their bases!

It looks like a solid enough original car that might be worth the ask, but the seller’s attitude needs an adjustment. Half of the all-caps ad is about who the seller won’t sell to. Not exactly Marketing 101, and turns me off to dealing with them.
