If you’re going to go hunting for a desirable Porsche 911, starting with one featuring Turbo-inspired bodywork is a good choice. While there are numerous cases of cars being scoffed at when they attempt to resemble a high horsepower sibling, there’s no such judgement in the Porsche community where a car sporting the turbocharged model’s bulbous fenders with a naturally-aspirated powerplant is often one of the rarest models you can find; more so in drop-top form, such as this 1987 Cabriolet turbo-look here on eBay.
If you’re looking at the certificate of authenticity, the M491 option is the one that takes this from an ordinary convertible to one of the rarest made. While the Porsche 930 was the de facto turbocharged model in the lineup, there was no drop-top version offered in the U.S. Thankfully, as Porsche often does, they heard the cries of enthusiasts in the wilderness, and while they didn’t go so far as to put the raucous engine into a convertible, they did make it possible to get every other option added in. This particular turbo-look 911 currently sits at $31,700 with the reserve unmet.
The M491 cars also got the upgraded suspension, wheels, brakes and the iconic whale-tail spoiler, all plucked directly from the Turbo parts bin. While the more powerful engine is certainly a rush, I’d be more than happy with those upgrades, plus the obvious bodywork enhancements. The car shown here actually has miles on the higher side, ticking in at just over 92,000, which is impressive for not only an air-cooled model but also one that is rare as this; it should be in the proverbial mothballs by now, according to most Porsche owners. The good news is that even with those miles, the interior is still in excellent condition.
With 217 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, the 3.2L flat-six has sufficient power to ensure you’ll make use out of those big brakes. The engine bay appears clean with factory stickers in place both on the engine itself and the body, about as good of a sign as you’re going to get that it hasn’t been painted. The current bid price is far too low for one of these, so I’m not surprised to see the reserve unmet; the turbo-look cars routinely sell for above $60,000, so this auction as a ways to go. The rarity and presumably an extensive service portfolio to go along with those miles make this a desirable G-body, but be careful you don’t end up spending 930 money.
Saw one of these in a movie one time. Can’t remember the movie, but the car is unforgettable. I’d take it with or without the turbo.
There was one Charlie Sheen’s character drove in “No Man’s Land” (1987). It’s a movie about a rookie cop infiltrating a car theft ring stealing Porsche’s. Stupid plot but there’s a bunch of really cool Porsches in it, including a beautiful black 1986 slant-nose RUF 930!
Why is Barn Finds posting a car whose auction ended the day before?
The auction still had a few hours left when this feature was posted. The ending time is in the eBay listing.
