Turbo SUV Time Capsule: 1993 GMC Typhoon

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Few SUVs from the early ’90s can match the performance, rarity, and collector appeal of the GMC Typhoon. This 1993 example, list here on craigslist and located in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, is one of only 532 built in Frost White with a matching white interior trim for the model year, and one of just 2,200 Typhoons produced in total for 1993. Powered by its factory 4.3L turbocharged V6 with a Garrett water-to-air intercooler, it’s said to do 0–60 in 5.3 seconds while delivering unmistakable period styling. The seller, the third owner, has kept it in a climate-controlled garage under a cover for 16 years, during which it’s accrued fewer than 3,100 miles for a current total of 47,732. Thanks for the tip Mitchell G.!

This Typhoon’s squared-off styling has aged well, with the Frost White paint and black trim showing beautifully. The roof rack delete option enhances the sleek profile, while tasteful, artist-signed pinstriping adds a subtle custom touch. OEM wheels remain in excellent condition, and the truck wears Yokohama AVS S4 tires. The seller also includes the original cargo net, an uncommon accessory.

Inside, the black leather seats are described as “like new,” with no rips or tears. All gauges, switches, and even the glovebox light function properly. Factory features include air conditionin, converted and upgraded in 2022, power windows, and a stock Delco CD/radio serviced in 2008. The Typhoon also retains its rear wing in excellent condition.

Mechanically, the truck benefits from a rebuilt “bullet-proof” transmission completed by Level 10 Performance in 2014, Bilstein sport shocks, a Borla stainless exhaust, and a new catalytic converter. The seller has invested over $11,000 in documented maintenance and upgrades, ensuring this Typhoon remains as quick and capable as it was in 1993.

The only blemish on its history is a “Not Actual Mileage” notation from the first owner in 2000, which the seller and several mechanics attribute to a DMV clerical error. The current New Jersey title confirms actual mileage. Included in the sale are the original owner’s manual, window sticker, two GM key/fob sets, an extra set of uncut keys, and a fitted cover.

Well-preserved Typhoons have a strong following, and this one’s low mileage, rare color combo, and careful stewardship make it stand out. Would you preserve it as a collector’s piece or give it occasional exercise on the road?

Raced an old guy in a Typhoon in our bone stock 89’LX. Was revving that sweet 5.0 at the traffic light 🚥 too and he just smiled. I only saw taillights🏁👋

These were the stuff back in the day. Fairly pedestrian by today’s standards

I would hope so, 3+ decades later. Plus it’s not always about being the absolute fastest. I wish auction show car guys knew that

Let’s agree to disagree. This vehicle was all about being fast. It definitely wasn’t about being an attractive design, that’s for sure

Would love to have the turbo 4.3 engine and leather seats to go in my 2001 S-10 Xtreme sport side standard cab . . When I bought it new , 180 horsepower was all I could get . .

Neat truck, I’d bet that if you took it to Mecum it would bring at least that asking price. Unfortunately it’s really too nice to drive and enjoy without it depreciating a lot.
