Here is a strange combination: a Chevy Vega and a race bred twin cam. You are reading that right, this American subcompact came from the factory with a twin cam engine built by the famous Cosworth Engineering in England. With only 3,500 ever produced, it’s not extremly rare, but we are sure most people have never seen one. This one is here on Sacramento’s craigslist for $800. It has been given a bad color change and needs some work but it could be an interesting project…
Here is a hilarous advertisement announcing the the Cosworth Vega. “One Vega for the price of two”! What a bargain! I’m sure the new engine was a huge improvement over the SOHC unit, but come on, was it really worth double the price? It does mention that the upgrades “would result in a rather exciting Vega”. If you could get the seller down to $500 it may be a good entry for the 24 Hours of Lemons and then it really would be a rather exciting Vega!
My dad had a black one. I was probably 8 when he had it. I loved it.He sold it to a guy who put the engine in his formula ford. I was sad.
buy it for the motor, sell the rest for scrap
i had one of these, for a 4 cyl it was way bad, mine was all original, ran and droveit was my daily driver(for days i drove) for a year, mine sat for 23 years or s and i got it running with in a week (needed a fuel pump) but it ran fine after i got all the injectors firing again, good reliable system that worked well
That can be made to run hard on the cheap.
I’ve had two vegas in my life. ’71 GT, and a ’76 Cosworth. They were like night and day. I had guys with v8 vegas trying to keep up with that cosworth. As good as it ran , I wonder now if a turbo would work on one. put it in another body and race it !!
I had a friend in high school who’s parents bought him a coworth vega. This kid did know a chevy from a ford so the car was in the wrong hands. I had a 69 mg midget that everybody wanted in high school. I traded the mg for the vega with his parents permission and started racing anything in sight. One of my nicer trades.
The ’76 Cosworth Vega was made in 8 colors including white starting in January 1976. 1,447 ’76s were built. The most common colors after black are white and Firethorn Metallic (red)
