Two For One: A Pair of Jeepster Commandos

No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you that’s a CJ-5 front end on the dark green Commando on the right.  The seller discloses this fact in his posting here one Craigslist where these two Jeepster Commandos, located in Chester, Massachusetts, are being sold as a pair for $2,100 “OBRO.”  No reason is provided as to why Commando #2 was the recipient of a facelift but we’ve all seen plenty of Jeep salads before and there’s a good chance a transplanted nose isn’t the only thing one might find borrowed on these 1971 Jeepsters.

Let’s start with Commando #1 still wearing what appears to be original olive green paint.  Despite some obvious rust on the leading edge of the hood, doors and hard top it looks like the body is in fairly solid condition.  The seller claims the rockers are in decent shape and points out the top is dented “but savable [sic].”  The driver side fender is a bit crumpled and the borrowed-from-another-Commando tailgate is quite rusty, however, both front and rear chrome bumpers show no significant sign of corrosion and neither do the headlight bezels.  All of the truck’s lenses appear intact and the presence of the original wheel covers helps preserve its authentically stock look.  Now for pickup style Commando #2.  How many different paint colors can you find?  I’ll reveal my guess at the end.  Some nice metalwork has been done to the rear wheel wells and the seller claims the bed floor has been replaced.  A set of rollbars were added at some point as well.  Significant rust is evident behind the driver side door and it looks like there might be some Bondo beneath the chalky green paint in a couple of places.  The rear bumper is missing but the seller has some other spare parts to go along with the sale.

Commando #1 is in need of new floors – there’s hardly enough metal left to support the driver seat whereas #2 received stainless steel replacements at some point, according to the seller.  Both Commandos have intact dashboards and #2 has seats that have been recovered.   The vinyl on #2’s doors also looks to be fairly well preserved.  Glass is present in all the right places on both trucks and appears solid with no visible cracks.

Both Jeepsters come with the preferred Dauntless V6 and the seller provides nice photos of both engine bays.  The  picture above shows Commando #1’s engine and as the seller explains “someone else needed the intake and carb more than the https://barnfinds.com/login/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fbarnfinds.com%2Ftwo-for-one-a-pair-of-jeepster-commandos did.”  It comes with a 3 speed  T14 transmission and “rolls but does not run.”  Commando #2’s motor is more complete but the truck is missing a transmission and transfer case.

If you were looking to restore one of these trucks which one would you choose?  Each has merit and it would be great to see both Commandos return to the road someday.  Considering the seller has a nice assortment of spare parts to go along with the sale, at $2,100 or best reasonable offer this might not be a bad opportunity for someone looking to tackle a Jeepster restoration project.  Oh, and I counted 9 different paint colors on Commando #2.  How many did you count?  Don’t forget the palette of colors visible on the roof of the cab!

Last year for the Dauntless (or Buick ) v6 before they switched over to the AMC in lines. Buick would soon buy the tooling back after the Oil Embargo and make excellent use of it in the years to come.

The price seems about right. Maybe Jeepster Jim would be interested for parts.

I don’t see a “set of roll bars” – only a single roll bar.

I’ll take Commando #1 and put a 4.0 straight six in it.
