This all-original California car is a 1970 AMC AMX and you can see that someone has been doing a bit of work on that original paint at some point. The seller says that it has “mostly original paint”. It’s listed on Hemmings for $13,500 and it’s located in Bakersfield, California. Thanks to Sal S for submitting this AMX!
These two-seaters are typically valued, and priced, below other contemporary muscle cars of the era. The AMX was the only steel-bodied two-seater at the time of their short run. 1970 was the last year for the AMX in its short three-year run and they aren’t as plentiful as Mustangs or Camaros are, so rarity doesn’t always equate to value.
The bodywork blends in with the driveway, says Captain Obvious. Hopefully there weren’t any big rust issues that someone was trying to correct but I’m guessing the edge of the trunk lid could have been a problem area as with a lot of other cars.
Well, the seats certainly can’t be original. But, the important part is that 4-speed, and this car also has AC but no word as to if it blows cold or not.
This is a 1970-only 360 cubic-inch V8 with 285 hp. It looks like it could use as much cosmetic work as the exterior could, and they say that the car “runs and drives, but needs TLC/resto.” This car is priced right in-between Hagerty’s #3 “good” and #4 “fair” value. What are your thoughts on this one? Could you take on the work and bring this car back to where it should be?
Scotty, the price is a little too steep for me, but I’d love to grab this! Paint and rust repair — you KNOW there’s some rot on it somewhere! — plus a thorough cleaning and upholstery to get rid of those seat covers (which might have stock sets underneath), along with the usual mechanical stuff you can’t avoid on a 47 year-old car.
Since it already has the four-speed (a BIG plus for me), I see no reason to do much more than get a little more out of the 360 with improvements that wouldn’t be apparent to onlookers. Brake upgrades as necessary, and tighten up the suspension.
Always thought these were underrated cars. If I had room for a ponycar, this would be it.
Looks like the ram air hood and side pipes were part of an SST package for the Javelin — were they standard on the AMX? Really like this but out of my price range.
Hi racer, 1970 was the 1st year for this hood.
Always liked them and can not figure why they never seem to bring big money like the big 3 muscle cars. Undervalued in my books and a heck of a car
1970 was my peak high school car crazy year and while these were also rans against the the Big Three pony cars, they also had a special appeal for me. Different? Underdog? I’m in.
Love it, wish I had the room.
My wife and I were killing time waiting for our truck to get it’s bedliner sprayed in when we noticed a white AMX at a used car dealer across the road. We walked over and checked it out, white with red interior V8, 4 speed no dents or rust, nice B.F. Goodrich tires on stock wheels. Salesman came out and begged us to take it home for $16,500. We were restoring our Mach1 at the time so we passed but I sure wish I had pulled the trigger as I love these cars.
These are so much the understood muscle car. Very vintage of the era and will go up in value very soon!!! Wish I could get it but just cant.
Hope a person with great understanding of the old school stuff buys this. You just don’t get a lot of chances to get the cool stuff in orig. shape often. Heck its in cali. hope its a dry car for the most. I think its a deal to be had.
Hate to say this, but I test drove a 2013 ss Camaro today with only 5k miles and 6.2 with a 6spd manual. Was impressed. but the 25k price made me think of getting something like this amx. Better for money, but a very nice Camaro that’s good to go. I’m just old school and will all ways love vintage.
1973 AMC 304 javelin thats making its way out the yard this year, always nice to know there others out there
Coming from someone that goes ape-schmit over AMC’s, this is no exception. While the very 1st AMX’s were pretty crude, this was as good as it got, for this style. This “Go-Package”, ( disc brakes, bigger tires, handling package and ram-air) was $298.00 with the 360. IDK, I’d have sported the extra $85 bucks for the 390, but I’m sure this gave plenty of bang for the buck. They were pretty popular, and of all the AMC’s to save, usually people saved these. Great find.
I like the 68-69 two seaters better but this is a cheap deal on a car tat needs minor work. LEGENDARY makes seat covers and there is good parts support for these cars and plenty of forums, facebook pages.
The 360 can be built to make 450hp with relative ease and parts can be had at your local parts place. Snap it up
It’s gone already
That darn spray paint. Guaranteed to look worse and it’s hard to imagine that it accomplishes anything in most cases. Is a big mismatched splotch somehow better than a scratch?
I love mine!
has ac? where’s the ac compressor or condenser.
I think in the original listing the a/c parts (compressor, etc.) were show separately in a box. Car has been sold.
Not sure why you guys seem to think these cars are “priced below other contemporary muscle cars”, my experience has been that they bring every bit as much as their contemporaries, and have been for quite some time.
look at the price for this one. Pretty cheap!!
In 1973 when I worked at a car dealer. We had 2 traded in in the same week. Both where 4 speed cars. One had the 390 and the other the 360. Drove both cars for about a week and fell in love with them. I still yearn for one. (There are many cars that I yearn for.) There was a big difference in the power in the two cars. Possible that the 390 had some “improvements”.
