Two-Year Wonder: 1979 Dodge Li’l Red Express

Our alert readers will recall that a few weeks ago, we featured one of these that was half-finished. Well, forget that one, because this one’s ready to rock, and it’s listed here on eBay in Glen Arm, Maryland.

Countless articles and reports and factual-informations have been written over the years about these very-limited-run trucks that, along with their Warlock cousins, shook up the idea of what a truck could be. The long story short is that, while the juggernaut that Walter P. and the Dodge Brothers had created was knocking on death’s door,   a loophole in American automobile emissions laws and a very creative design team at Chrysler created a sensational set of trucks. Motivated by detuned Police-spec V8s, sporting wild semi-truck-style exhaust stacks, and hearkening back to the Old West, the Li’l Red Express were only produced for 1978 and 1979, for a total of fewer than 8,000 units.

The seller of this one has quite a lot to say about it, so I’ll see about condensing it. It’s got 51,000 miles on it, runs and drives, newer paintwork, and has won many trophies at shows. I can tell you right off the bat that those aren’t the correct wheels for it, but they look decent. The seller says the originals and a bunch of brochures will come with the truck, so that’s a plus.

One of the original adverts for these classic icons read, in part “Meet the new Li’l Red Truck from Dodge, the truly ‘customized’ pickup that’ll stir excitement even among the most avid ‘truck-truck’ enthusiasts. Best of all, it comes fully equipped from the factory. No need to seek out expensive local customizers and special-equipment suppliers… The new Dodge L’il RED TRUCK will turn a lot of heads… a limited edition pickup with chrome-plated good looks. Only Dodge has it. So, live a li’l…a Li”l RED TRUCK, that is! ” Now, the only question is: Would you “have it” in your garage?

    These are very special.

I would not be surprised to see even ones showing lot of wear to be going for 50 grand and up in next few years.

1978 was the better year for these. Dodge made them with W2 heads for a production model so they could use the heads for racing. Nice truck!
