Underpriced? 1967 Pontiac Firebird Convertible

The Pontiac Firebird came out in 1967, along with its corporate cousin the Chevy Camaro. Together they aimed squarely at the Mustang, which was selling in the multiple hundreds of thousands over what had been expected. GM wanted a slice of that pie. Hence cars like this handsome 1967 Firebird Convertible. It’s here on craigslist for $15,000 and can be collected from Kewaskum, Wisconsin, near Milwaukee. Pat L does us right once more with this tip.

This Firebird is labeled as “almost original,” leading one to inquire what’s not original about it. For one thing, the HO stripe, which should not appear on a non-HO model. The interior certainly looks original, the driver’s seat worn but not destroyed, red vinyl looking amazing to complement the red steering wheel and dash and the burgundy dash pad. Inside, except for a bit of wear, things look great—like you wouldn’t want to touch anything. The convertible top also seems in quite good shape, doubtlessly replaced in the near past.

Underneath is where the issues might be. In one photo, a missing section of floor seems to be filled by a piece of metal that’s not welded in, but just sitting there. Other rust damage appears to be lurking there, too. The photo after that one might or might not show the underside of that same trouble spot. There’s no information given, and on the opposite end, no accounting for rust or bodywork except a mention of a replaced quarter panel. The trunk lid appears to have flaking paint, and the hood looks faded, though it’s hard to tell. When sellers say nothing, sometimes it’s because they have nothing good to say. You’d be wise to take the offer of a phone call seriously and get your questions answered.

The other day I profiled a car here on Barn Finds, selling for $20,000. Taking the seller’s cues, I asked whether maybe this one was too good to be true for the price. This Pontiac doubly has my antennae up. Fifteen grand for a driveable Firebird convertible? Mostly original? Is this body full of bubbles and filler? Is the floor gone (the car is from Wisconsin, after all)? Is the engine a mess—and why no photo under the hood of the 326-CID V8? If none of these worries are real, then this car is undermarket by—what?—ten or fifteen thousand dollars? But if the body is rotted and just held together with Bondo under primer under paint, then forget how it looks from a distance. You’re gonna spend a lot of money getting it back to right. Call the guy and find out, then report your discoveries in the comments. We all want to believe in miracles, right?

That does seem like a good deal even considering the rust. Of course you might easily spend 15K just sorting the body and paint. If not more.

There was a 326 HO Firebird in 1967,so the stripe would be correct if it is.All the options visible check out.If there was more info on the engine,if it has a Carter AFB and dual exhaust it’s the HO.

This looks like one of those cars you buy to apply the VIN plate to a Dynacorn body.

Don’t fix this; remove and replace. You’d put much more money getting this car straight and clean again than you would spending $13.5K for a fresh new unibody.

Before i put a frame in my 67 firebird ragtop i used to drive down the road with my finger between the door and rear quarter up by the door lock ( no I didn’t eat all the lead paint in my room as a kid) and i could feel every ripple in the highway, a piece of 3×2 box fits right in the subframes, so i redid the grame right to the rear bumber. Great cars, mine was Ls6 M22 10 bolt posi

I think its priced too high, i would rather no motor no trans, its all about the metal,to old not to do it right. Lost of fun in a bird
