Wagon Conversion: 1973 Chevrolet Corvette

When these oddball wagon-ized Corvettes show up for sale, they’re usually in pretty decent shape. The kits were limited in production and it seems there’s a small faction of Corvette enthusiasts who are happy to restore them back to fine shape. This 1973 model is an outlier, clearly suffering from half-done-project-itis, and in need of some period-correct wheels and bodywork. Find the Corvette here on craigslist for $7,250.

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen one of these with the rear hatch opened up, and I have to say, it makes these intriguing conversions even more compelling. I mean, it’s a Corvette with a functional trunk! You may even be able to fit some golf clubs in there. The problems I see with this wagon conversion are mostly cosmetic, as the paint is too modern and the wheels are grossly oversized. Fix those two things and you’re well on your way, in my opinion.

The seller doesn’t offer us much information about this Corvette’s history or the origins of the wagon modifications. There were a few different vendors that produced a conversion kit, and really, all of them were fairly limited in the years and number of kits offered. The Corvette is a desirable four-speed example, so that alone makes this a project worth saving. The door panels have been removed but are shown as being included in the listing photos.

The 350 has headers and an HEI distributor. The seller notes it has power steering, brakes, and windows, and that it’s a non-A/C car. The Corvette has some of the classic signs of being a project in the middle of completion, and certainly the cosmetic tweaks reflects a bit of confusion in terms of what it wants to be. Regardless, this is a car worth saving, as a kammback Corvette with a four-speed is one you won’t see coming down the road all that often.

Perhaps a name change of this site to “Corvettes R Us” is in order…

That’s exactly why I don’t get why people are paying top dollar or more for them. Especially the C3. Literally a dime a dozen.

Excuse me here. I have loved Corvette’s since I was old enough to know what one was. That’s a lot of years. BUT why the hell would anyone ruin a Corvette like this? It is a sports car, not the family station wagon! It makes me sick to look at it. Oh well, that’s my humble opinion.

Neal, this kit was no doubt added when the car was just a used car and someone was looking for something different looking to drive.

Not much appeal these days, and no one would do this now.

This is not a Corvette. I wouldn’t tarnish the name with this piece of junk.

That’s the worst wagon conversion I’ve ever seen.

$7,250, maybe if the rest of the car was in great shape. The way it looks at the moment, not even worth half of that.

This looks a lot like a breadvan inspired conversion, could be interesting if it were finished in that vein

I usually like wagon conversions, and big fan of shooting brakes, but this is ugly and with those huge billboard blind spots, I’m surprised it’s lasted this long. I rate this a Nope.

It reminds me of that movie “Corvette Summer”. Although that one at least had some style to it even though it was a basterdized version, but certainly not as bad as this awful mess.

I’ve been saying, the C3 Corvette’s have go to be one if not the TOP of the list cars ever to be customized. Or at least molested cars of all. I remember these back when they were new cars or used a couple of years, horrible then and worse now. LOL

The topper shell cap certainly doesn’t flow with the original car and probably could be improved if it followed the curve and recess of the quarters.
If it’s a decent running, driving platform the price isn’t outrageous and probably will go for less. Something could be done if your into custom and have a decent imagination and some skill.
The purist are going to hate anything altered and are justified in thinking so regarding Corvette in general.
The early C3 is my 2nd favorite body style behind the late C2.
I personally have no problem doing something crazy with a C4 or C5 platform.

EZ to load & unload the groceries!
Needs some glass in the rear sides – terrible blind spots.

Great write up Jeff. And I think you’re right on the money that this was meant to carry golf clubs or some other sporting equipment.
It could be redone with a little more current style like original wheels and a good paint job.
I would drive it just to see the look on Corvette purest faces as I go by.
As they say “The Vette gets them…” Well, this one this one doesn’t.
