Wall Art: 1981 Ferrari Mondial

Some experts say you can’t total a Ferrari. For instance, the ex-Henri Oreiller 250 GTO was effectively totaled after the driver died in a competition-related accident, only to be rebuilt and fetch $38 million at auction. Similarly, a 2004 Enzo that snapped in half was rebuilt and sold for millions after rebirth. I do not believe the same fate awaits this Ferrari Mondial convertible here on craigslist, which was apparently sawed in half as part of a movie stunt for the Cannonball Run franchise.

The seller has the chopped Mondial in his showroom for entertainment purposes, as it is both an attraction and a destination: the attraction part is obvious (not the Mondial piece, but rather a hacksawed Ferrari of any kind) but the destination less so: he’s installed various entertainment features for guests with children, including a Playstation gaming console and a DVD player, all operated by the key in the ignition. Too cool!

Of course, if you have more than one child, they will hopefully be OK not sitting next to each other (most siblings are). The Mondial still shows nicely on the interior, with nicely bolstered leather seats, an uncracked dash (well, aside from the big one in the middle) and full carpets. I don’t know the Cannonball Run movies well enough to know which edition saw a Mondial chopped in half, but I’d love to know – so fill me in by posting in the comments below.

While the gaming system is old, it’s still downright modern by the Mondial’s standards. Although it’s very obviously never returning to the road, it does maintain a clear CarFax in case the value of Ferrari’s most forgettable model suddenly spikes in the next few years and you find the missing half on the backlot of a Universal Studios movie set. This entertaining display would liven up practically any showroom, and absolutely generate foot traffic if visible from the road. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Jack M. for the find.

It appears to be priced right at 8K, there has to be more than that in parts value alone.

What parts? It’s a few body panels, maybe a door and a couple of seats, one front and one back. A steering wheel and a console. Half a dash. One taillight, one headlight. Theres no engine or running gear. I mean it’s cool and I wish I had the garage for it. But 8k? Someone’s having a hell of a dream after hitting the pipe.

I can see this ending up inside some gentlemen’s bar. The owner won’t have to feel bad about having that “my other car is a Ferrari” liscense plate frame anymore.

Glad not to see (thus far) any Mondial hate comments. Imho, they are really pretty reliable cars, for a Ferrari. 308 engine and gated shifter, what’s not to like?? And, best part, you can still pick them up for a song.

Not part of the Cannonball Run. Not at all. I know the movies, but more importantly, I almost purchased this car twice in the last 20 years. It was cut in half as part of a trade show display.

It’s not worth the money for parts, it’s strictly wall art at this point.
