The listing for this rusty 1967 Volkswagen Bus is quite short, with just one picture and the seller clearly not interested in getting best offers or really any questions about the Type 2’s history or condition. To be fair, I get it – there’s not much here to wonder about – so I’ve taken the liberty of filling in some possible blanks for you below in terms of what to do with this blank canvas here on craigslist with a price of $900. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Peter R. for the find.
There really is just that one picture up top, so let’s explore what possibilities may exist for rejuvenating the battered Bus. One popular option is the rat-rod look seen here, where you get just barely enough metal cobbled together to keep it one piece, and make the rest of it appear as offensive and as weathered as you’d like. Windows that roll up and doors that close are optional, but nice to have. You’ll have to fake the faded lettering for some old contractor business, however.
And if it’s too rusty to preserve, just cut all the bad stuff out and create a custom shorty. These are definitely for people who march to the beat of their own drummer, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this approach if the body is too rusty to save. Your greatly diminished hauling capacity is nothing compared to the hit your pride will take when driving one of these to the local car show, but who cares – at least you made lemons out of lemonade.
Going in the extreme opposite direction, you could add even more utility to the ’67 on craigslist by extending it a few inches and adding some extra windows. And we all know, in the world of air-cooled VWs, more windows equals a higher price. I’d guess this extended Bay Window is worth at least $300K, maybe more if that Beetle body up top is an early one. So, with some possibilities before you, how would you rebuild the $900 Type 2 on craigslist?
Wow what a pc’s of crap, they must mean that they will give you $900.00 to take it away. There is nothing left here to save. There is just a time when you should call uncle and give it up. I don’t know how big of a fool you’d need to be to buy this at any price but I’m sure your out there itching to lay down your bucks. And good luck to you too.
Oh, I don’t know. I think I’d like to hang that right side passenger door with the bullet holes outside on my fence. IDK why. Just do.
Ha Ha! No! Scrap it, melt it down and produce something in steel of value.
Geez! Could a VW engine even move that extended heavyweight 6 wheeled behemoth in the last photo of extreme modification? I saw a shorty vw van in North Pole AK years ago. The owner said it was put away every year no later than the end of October, for obvious reasons.
It would be interesting to know how this is powered. I thought of a Phaeton W12 engine, at first.
I don’t get the cachet of these busses.
They were very underpowered, they rode high on their suspension and were badly affected by crosswinds on highways, they had just a sheet of metal between the driver and whatever the front came into contact with, they had little or no heat in the winter, and they can cost you $100K – up for a very good restored one.
If that’s your cup of tea….I mean, your big stein of fine German beer, good luck.
In Europe they made perfect delivery vehicles for businesses. Open the side doors and you could put a 1 ton pallet inside and it was rated for it! Slow, yeah, but cheap and easy to maintain, and it could do heavy lifting.
The only thing I can think of to explain the big $$$ these go for is that they are evocative of a particular time in our history (summer of love, Woodstock, Haight-Ashbury, Vietnam protests, etc.). I lived through that era though and have no particular desire to drive one of these awful vans again. They’re just terrible to drive. Aside from all the points you mention they redefine the term “underpowered”. You’ll find out there are hills you didn’t know were hills and will be left in the dust by heavily-laden tractor-trailers pulling away from stoplights.
Maybe a restomod with a turbocharged Subaru engine in the back wouldn’t be too bad though. :)
Put this rusty old shell on top of a blazer chassis and head for the hills, it would be perfect for that Mad Max gathering in the Mojave or Burning Man
Heck no that rusted hulk is worth at least 50,000 bucks! Put more windows in it and it goes up exponentially.
Local wrecker should go down there and take it to the shredder under the derelict car act. Nerve of this guy. 900 bucks, one pic, no title, not even a rusty roller with a seized engine. Only this he missed was comparing to mecum auction pricing. smh…
The seller will be lucky to get 1/10 of his asking price for it in scrap metal.
One picture is worth 1,000 words. :)
That thing is a soup can waiting to be made.
Are those bullet holes in the door?
one picture of your ‘possible blanks’ could have been of a scrap yard. I’ve seen considerably better there.
Have the welders just bring the cutting torches. Actually, a can opener should be enough.
Settle down, dunno if you get out much, but people are driving around in the peoples car. The brand didn’t falter after the fall of Germany. Yeah it happened, it can’t be changed. It’s just a friggin rotten old bus and the last I checked you don’t have to be a nazi member to own or like em. Geez hate to hear what you think of Henry Ford
Whoa! I uh wow um er . Guess I’ll never ask to feature my LS powered Jetta wagon here. Bye
I’d push it into the corner of my yard and use it as a shed, but not for that price.
Paint it camo, park it in the woods and use it for a deer blind…
I’m not a hunter, but that’s not a bad idea.
That extendo-bus is awesome
Sauerkraut came from China, originally. Anyway, some people think sauerkraut is awful because they never had real homemade sauerkraut – it goes well with good old American hot dogs.
I’m all in Ikey! Brats and Reuben’s too. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/14524/wisconsin-bratwurst/
This hulk just sold for $2800 at a Gas City In car show. Complete junk.
Hate to burst your bubble, but ol’ Henry Ford was quite the Nazi supporter. Read up on his anti-semitism and support for Germany.
Henry Ford specifically disliked the bankers most of which were jews.
Anti Union and worker as well.
Why call it an asking price, if it’s not negotiable?
Awesome yard art .
Except my neighbors would call city enforcement on me.
I have an unrestored [but complete & running] 1950s British coachbuilt limousine sitting in the driveway until I get the new garage finished.
Neighbor complained about the car. The county zoning inspector gave me 30 days to get rid of the vehicle because [according to county regulations] if it’s not displaying legal license plates, it’s considered solid waste and an eyesore. So I put legal tags on it.
Seems when a vehicle is displaying those nice shiny new license plates, it’s no longer an eyesore! Yep, that’s right, spend some money with the government, and it magically transforms into something of beauty again!
Really???????????
Doug… my first VW was a ’55 version of your van pictured.Carried firewood to burn in the back on the -0 temps in Goose Bay, Labrador.
@Bob Hess – I would’ve been concerned about burning firewood that close to the gas tank, but in Goose Bay that would probably be the only way to stay warm in that thing.
Some wise man once said, “A fool and his money shall soon be parted.”
Blaster, have you ever heard of a man by the name of Ben Pon? He was a Dutch importer who came up with the idea of the bus. Do some research. The concept of the bus was developed after ww2 and Hitler. Research your history my friend. Be well..
Turn it over and make a planter.
The first generation of the VW Type 2 aka Bus, came out in 1950. That was 5 years after the war. Hitler was either dead or living in Argentina by then and had nothing to do with the Bus. Nice try though.
For god sake somebody please put this out of our misery!!!!!!!!
Actually the idea for the bus was taken from a sketch of the Dutch VW importer Pon in 1947 so after the war.
i say its a teaser shot. under all that rust is a completely restored VW bus. they just forgot to remove the jackstand from the close up shot. its nothing a little lubricant will not solve. that front bumper is savable. and the glass would make great party trays. its no longer for sale cause the guy that bought it for 900. resold it for 25,000. why 1 picture?????????????theres 6 sides to the outside of a car.i have done planning in my life exactly like this. and guess how my life turned out. im lucky i have a good wife.its bodacious yard art.
Ran when parked?
@SCW – No, sir, you’ve made a completely natural mistake. It should have been: “He parked it, and ran”. See? Very similar, but not the same.
As @Bob Hess – knows; they do make wonderful wood furnaces, though.
Pass on it ! Not enought time in my life to work on anything that bad again and to the next guy good luck !
Junque !
…Clear title?
It might need shocks and tires just curious if it runs I’d like to buy it for my wife (not). What a POS..!! If you go and put that POS on a tow truck it will crumble..!
The walking dead could use it in one of their future episodes and I’m sure the studio would pay a fair price for it.
This reminds me the one I sold a year ago. Got 1400$ out of it. Every VW bus worth at least a penny or two. ;-)
I got a wash-out on the back 40 this bus would fit perfectly in….just sayin💩
