Well-Kept Classic Pickup: 1981 Toyota Hilux

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Compact Toyota pickups from the early 1980s have quietly become some of the most sought-after trucks on the market, and this 1981 Toyota Hilux Regular Cab Short Bed listed here on craigslist in Dupont, Colorado, shows why. Simple, durable, and increasingly hard to find in unmodified condition, this truck represents an era when Toyota pickups earned their reputation the hard way. Thanks for the tip, Mike F.!

According to the seller, this Hilux was purchased directly from the original owner, with the intention of turning it into a clean weekend truck. That plan is reportedly about 90 percent complete, and the truck is described as fully drivable with only minor finishing touches left for the next owner. It’s a 2WD model equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, keeping things straightforward and true to its utilitarian roots.

The seller states the truck has approximately 114,000 original miles, which is relatively low for a vehicle of this age and type. No major mechanical issues are reported, and the truck is said to have no leaks and be capable of daily driving. While the brakes are described as a bit spongy, they are reported to function properly, something a future owner may choose to address for peace of mind.

Inside, the truck appears to retain a level of completeness that’s becoming rare. The seller notes that the radio, heater, and all gauges are working, and there are no missing buttons, suggesting this Hilux hasn’t been picked apart or heavily altered over the years. It also comes with a clean title and a Carfax report, which adds another layer of confidence for buyers looking for an honest example.

An overland-style bed rack is currently installed and is included with the sale, though the seller mentions it can be removed if desired. That flexibility makes the truck appealing to different buyers, whether someone wants a light-duty work truck, a simple cruiser, or a period-correct classic pickup.

Early Toyota Hilux trucks like this one have found new appreciation among collectors, contractors, and enthusiasts alike. Their simple mechanical design, proven longevity, and classic proportions make them versatile in ways modern trucks often aren’t. With values continuing to climb, clean and largely unmodified examples are getting harder to find at approachable prices.

This 1981 Hilux appears to offer a solid balance of usability and originality, leaving just enough room for personalization without starting from scratch. Would you keep it as a clean weekend cruiser, or put it back to work doing what these trucks were built to do?

Since the write-up doesn’t include it, the price is $5950.
If it is as sound as the seller claims, then this seems like a bargain.
So it’s only 2WD, no biggie. It would probably cost twice that if it were 4WD.
