What Am I Missing? 1979 L82 Corvette

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Ok, so what am I missing? Why isn’t this car gone by now? This 1979 Chevrolet Corvette is listed here on eBay with a buy it now of $5,000, and the seller is even looking for offers below that! It’s located in Grand Blanc, Michigan and has been “stored in a barn”.

The seller states that they have owned the car for eight years but are selling it due to an upcoming move. There’s some cosmetic damage on the right side, but I really don’t see anything that bothers me too much; certainly nothing that couldn’t be touched up and driven. We’re told the tires have only 50 miles on them.

The seller says that a new buyer may want the interior and exterior redone, but honest, it’s not that bad! We’re also told there’s nothing mechanically wrong with the car. According to thevettenet.com the L82 means the 350 cubic inch V8 has 225 rather than 195 horsepower.

Naturally it’s an automatic as most ’79 cars were, but the interior really doesn’t look that bad to me. Like I said, am I missing something? If I’m not and one of you folks clicks the buy it now, please let us know!

You aren’t missing anything. Nobody wants them, and there’s a million out there.( there’s 2310 Corvettes on Hemmings alone) My brother has one he’d like to sell, an ’82, nobody wants it. These were OUR dream cars, not today. This is nothing like a new Corvette. Like selling a boat, I bet the owner was happy to get rid of it.

I still shudder at how many people traded in 1969-72 Chevelle SS, 1969 Camaro SS, etc on these AND walked out of the dealer with a payment book. If I was one, and thank God I’m not, I’d be an old drunk in a trailer somewhere, wearing a dirty tank top and raving to myself over my past unforgiven big sin.

Anyway, I digress. I hope the buyer got a good deal and didn’t pay near the asking price.

Howard, I’d love to talk to your brother about his 82…for personal reasons that’s one of my dream cars! Huge fan of the last two years of the C3 – thanks!

Wow, thanks for the response. He hasn’t aggressively tried to sell it, kind of kept it local,( Wisc.) with little response. I’ll tell him if he wants to go this route, I’ll give him the BF’s info. I’m not into Corvettes(obviously) never even rode in one, much less driven one, so I know little about it. I don’t hate Corvettes, 58’s are my favorite, but times have changed, I just don’t see the interest in these like say 10 or 15 years ago.

The two happiest days of a boat owner….the day he buys it; and the day he sells it. This could apply to Corvettes as well.

I agree. I ordered one similar to this in 79 in Midnight Blue and the same interior. Mine came with glass tops and spoilers along with the L82 and just about every other goody I could get. Worst car ever.

Seems like a good deal, but…judging by the state of the foliage and the location, I’m assuming those photos weren’t recent?

The market speaks again ! Help out your brother get get rid of his 1982 Howard ! Irregardless of your dislike for the car, you’re sadly mistaken to assume no one want’s them. Loved blowing them away in the 82 5.0 mustang !

That seems right in the ballpark price wise for a Vette of that age here in Michigan, you guys that want one may want to keep your eyes out for a deal up this way. It’s like a lot of things, some regions are more affordable than others depending on what you’re looking for. About five years ago I was at a diner in South Dakota talking to a local about all the old cars that where around. He thought I was looking down upon them, then I let him in a little secret. He about pooped his pants when I told him what a couple of “jalopies” could bring!

Four crappy pictures, with none of the engine or underside of the car, and no pertinent information about the car. It’s sold now, but lets be honest, it’s a lousy ad!

It may have L-82 badges on the hood, but there is no mention of what engine is in the car now. I can see an aftermarket air cleaner, so what else under the hood, has been changed? As a Michigan car, I wouldn’t be surprised to find rusty floors, rust in the a-pillars, and quite possibly a rusted frame too.

With a better ad, that included more pictures and provided a little more information, you might be able to get $6000-$7000 for the car. Still, $5000 for a so so 79, that needs paint and maybe more, seems about right to me.

Needing paint and interior 5k is too much

It’s already been repainted. See the painted door striker? paint doesn’t hide everything….IMHO

Darn, not fast enough. I was thinkin about takin a trip back to Chi-town and then a little weekend jaunt to Flint on the other side of the lake to pick me up a Vette. But…I guess it wasn’t meant to be. …until the new owner decides to sell…

I will stay to what i say about the low h/p emission stuff. these vettes can be fixed up with a good h/.p motor and good trans. and a lot of fun.
They will still run like the old ones!!!! And kill you if you are ignorant.

    Diamonds in the rough.

Only the rear diffs were assembled very sloppy (since the car had 210hp) and 360hp will seriously tax it (ask me how i know) there is also only a handful of guys on the planet that can massage these diffs the right way and n! They aint doing it for 2g’s either….

There’s probably a greater than 70% chance that this was bought by a flipper. Clean it up a bit, place a much better ad, and make a couple grand.

Corvettes – you obviously love them or hate them. I’m on the love side and miss the one I owned for 30 years.

There will be another. Probably one like this. Cheap and enjoyable.

Had a cherry 79 blue with both sets of T tops, 67000 original miles, sweet inside and out. One of the best days was waving to new owner leaving with it.

“Nobody wants them” might be a bit of overstatement but these certainly aren’t the most sought after Corvettes, and there are tons of them out there. All in all I think this was a fair deal for both parties.

I have an 82 with crossfire injection, mirror t tops, auto with o/d and am/fm/8track….with 48,000 actual miles on it ….sitting in the tall grass outside my shop. it is Red with black leather inside. The lady owner cant decide to fix it or what to do?? She had me put new $1,000 tires on it 60 days ago. Then i saw her at the courthouse 4 days ago……i said the vette?? She said oh yeh….i forgot all about it. That is all that was said…..so??

Sounds like mechanics lien time. I’ve almost bought a couple in the past that way were the mechanic ultimately got the title to it for unpaid work.

Just curious about the courthouse reference. Be interesting to know what was going on.
