Who’s Carl? 1946 Ford Produce Truck

I’m lucky enough to live in a community that supports local farmers. Fresh fruits and vegetables are pedaled at our local Farmer’s Market each Saturday morning. How great would this truck be if you were a regular produce vendor at a Farmer’s Market? It certainly would draw this car guys attention! The truck is a 1946 Ford and can found here on Craigslist with an asking price of only $1,000! Located in Desert Hot Springs, California, the truck appears to be mostly rust-free. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Rich G for the tip on this truck!

Unfortunately there is only one photo in the ad. I’m not sure why the seller wouldn’t include more photos, but maybe they are looking for a quick sale and they figured the $1,000 asking price would do the trick. Light commercial trucks like this have been used for decades to move and sell produce. The ’46 truck appears to be based on the Mercury Commercial trucks of the same era. What do you think? Is this truck worth a $1,000 gamble?

Definitely worth the asking, not only for what’s three, but also the potential it offers.

Montana, I think you have it backwards. The Canadian Mercury truck was based on the Ford truck. In fact, they were Ford trucks with any part that said “Ford” was replaced with a part that said “Mercury”. And, I agree that it is a typical CL ad: 1 picture and virtually no description. A lot of people who list on CL sure must like to talk to people, explaining the same thing over and over and over rather than just listing a detailed description in the ad.

Well, it’s a great truck, not sure how many peaches or tomatoes you are selling, but a sledge hammer would make short work of that. Use the lumber to make a poker shack on the back. Without any modifications, pack a lunch, it will be a long ride.

I have to agree Howard your not going anywhere in this truck at any great speed. It difficult to know what to do with a truck like this. It’s an awful big lumb to store if you don’t have a use for it. My vote would be to modernize it. Which means to me the cab and front clip are the only real value here. The rest I’d sell on to a purist. Or I’d part out. This is just my opinion of course. I guess you could keep the frame and build on that. But it just seam easier to transplant the cab onto a modern truck. A roll over would be an ideal donor.

Probably best. If one kept it like this, 1st order of business would be fix the flat tire ( LRO) and that in itself could take a day of driving around. Not many, except truck stops, fix split rims anymore. It’s gone, so some lucky buyer got it.
