Wide Body Wonder: 1968 Corvette Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This poor Corvette has been bruised, beaten, and bondoed! Someone grafted a wide body kit onto it and painted the whole thing orange. Then they proceeded to lose the title… That’s a shame too because this is 4-speed car that was running not that long ago. The frame is claimed to be solid and there are a lot of good parts here. It’s located in Evansville, Indiana and is listed here on eBay with no reserve. Better hurry though because the bidding ends soon!

It looks like someone had their way with things under the hood too. Let’s hope that things are more go than show in here though. The seller does mention aluminum heads, headers, Mallory distributor, and more so there’s some hope.

The inside looks trashed, but if this was really born as a ’68 convertible, it might be worth restoring. Upholstery kits, door panels, and all the trim are readily available. The interior may be the least of your concerns though.

Corvettes are perfect candidates for wild modifications because of their fiberglass bodies. A close inspection would need to be done to determine if this one is worth taking back to original or if it should be left as is. Sometimes body kits are installed to cover up crash damage. It may be a little vulgar, but personally I’d be tempted to leave the radical body and focus my attentions on the engine, brakes, and interior. How about you?

No Corvette body should ever be modified. They are works of art right from the factory.

Exactly. I don’t get it either. Someone actually has a thought “hmph. I can do better than this (even thought I have no skills). Let me tear into this thing”. WTF?

This was probably the bomb forty~fifty years ago… not so much now. A ’68 Vette roadster in stock form would look better these days. If I was a buyer, my plan would be to restore the body along with everything else.

That front end doesn’t look like a 1968.

      Miguel,

It’s not. It should have a chrome bumper and visible grills below it. It looks more like a mid-seventies front end treatment. It’s probably a second or third owner modification.

I don’t know what would possess someone to put a wide body kit on a Vette. They just destroy the sleek lines that came from the factory.
Hopefully it’s possible to surgically remove the offending appendages to bring her back to original.

Not possible, THE WHOLE BODY OF THIS CAR IS MID-LATE 70TIES there is no 1969 body anywhere in there. Since the title is lost it might be possible that the car is a 77 and the owner just wants to inflate the price. He did not provide vin, thats questionable on a no title car.

This is a 3-5k car (frame indeed looks good and manual is desirable) since all the c3 race cars were convertibles with hard top on thats exaclty the route i would take with this one. Gut the interior (instead of tossing thousands at it). Drop a stroker in it (the engine is not original anyways) with individual thtottle bodies if i had the $$$. Paint it white and blue with red pinstripe or SUNOCO blue/yellow and viola! Nice lookin vintage race car out of this steamin heap!

’75 was the last year for C3 convertibles so it’s no later than that.

Back in the day, HRM did one of these. Didn’t like it then, don’t like it now.

The seller says, aluminum oil pan, not heads.

With a missing/salvage title, why bother. It’s not valuable enough to justify the expense of restoring. If the title is salvage, as one portion of the description states, it will never have much value. Someone would be better off saving their money and hold out for a better car.

I like it. If she stays cheap it would be great fun. 5K is getting to the top. I like the stripes and wheels. Hammer down!

Pull the body off, restore the drive train and chaises, then find a doner body and put it back in good form. Expensive? Sure. But, with an owner of means a very worthy project.

I admit to being torn in 2 directions. If it were a 68-72 then stock body preffered, however since it is not, modified PROPERLY, it would be a cool car, atleast you won’t see a dozen just like it on street or at car show, though i would be embareassed to take to corvette only show

I would prefer a stock body, but if the custom is well done, some of those are OK too. I would be wary of the no title on this one simply because things don’t appear correct. His add says 68 or 69, but the body says 75 or later. Wrong front and rear bumpers, and the hood is one piece, The earlier cars had a separate cowl panel.

I swear, what I’m looking at is Darryl Dawkins (Chocolate Thunder) Corvette, when he was with the Philadelphia 76er’s, way back in the mid-1970’s with the likes of Dr. J – Julius Erving and Bobby Jones as his teammates. His claim to fame was his backboard shattering dunks. He had, what he called, his Dawkmobile…a heavily custom modified Corvette that looks identical to what’s pictured.

Definitely not a 68….68’s had different door handles looks like a 74 or 75

No, the door handles match a 68.

Body is a mix match from various models.

Some of you guys sure don’t know C3 Corvettes, I’d bet it is a 1969 convertible from what I see. I remember those body kits, it included the front and rear shown, and would fit 1968 on up.. I probably have a Super Chevy mag that features one just like it. If it was 1975 or so, and you bought a 69 convertible with front and rear end damage, what else to do but put a kit on it.

    If so, please rescue it.
