Wine Country Find: 1989 Ford F-250 XLT 4×4 460

Like a glass of 2021 Domaine Serene Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir… uhhhh.. ok, maybe a glass of red wine isn’t the best way to describe a big, bold, red, 1989 Ford F-250 XLT 4×4 with huge wheels and a honkin’ 460 V8, come to think of it. Hey, you can’t blame me, this big beauty is located in Portland, Oregon, not far from the Willamette Valley, one of the world’s best wine regions. The seller has it posted here on craigslist and is asking 52 bottles of wine, no wait, they’re asking just $4,900! Here is the original listing, and thanks to Curvette for the tasty tip!

The color of this 1989 Ford F-250 XLT 4×4 just reminded me of wine, sorry. I’m surprised at the asking price; it’s 50% less than Hagerty’s #4 fair-condition value, and it looks fantastic. What’s the deal (as nobody from Oregon says) here? For traveling through vineyards, those wheels may do the trick, but I’d kick them back to a more factory size if this were my truck, and I wish it were.

The eighth-generation F-Series was made from 1986 through 1991 here in the U.S. market, and this truck is anything but regular or standard, despite its single-cab and long-bed body style. I wonder how many cases of Bergström 2023 Le Pré du Col Pinot I could fit in the back of this truck? Just for the record, pickup drivers can also be wine lovers.

The Scarlet Red interior isn’t a wine name, but it looks about as close to being perfect as I can imagine. Seriously, $4,900 for this truck? How is this still for sale? A 3/4-ton pickup is fairly heavy-duty for most people today who just use them for commuting, but it’s hard to argue with any aspect of this F-250 4×4 in my world. The XLT Lariat brings a level of refinement to balance out the aroma and… Sorry, I got caught up in wine again.

One bad cork related to this listing is that there is no engine photo. It has the top gas-powered engine, and there isn’t a photo of that. I banish this seller to a month of drinking Boone’s Farm Strawberry wine! No, I’m sure the seller would send any interested parties a photo of the big, bold, thirsty Ford 460-cu.in. OHV V8, which was rated at 230 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. It’s sent through a transfer case and a four-speed automatic to all four huge tires as needed, and they say it’s “running and driving,” which isn’t a glowing report, but I hope it works as great as it looks. If so, this is the best deal in America right now. Any thoughts on this truck, or on Willamette Valley wines?

Despite the fact the mileage is probably like a boat, measured in gallons per mile, this seems too good to be true. And 135,000 miles?

    Overdrive doesn’t help the 460 much 💁‍♂️
These babies guzzle gas almost the same loaded as empty in my experience.

You put the smell of Pall Malls in there and I get dads 88 Tempo (same color) back

I’ve had a chance to drive a couple of these with 460 and 5 speeds. Great running trucks, and can pull a barn down. But like Stan said above even with an overdrive the gas mileage isn’t that great. But then again, if you’re getting an F250 or F350 for working purposes, gal mileage isn’t always on top of the priority list. These 460s will run a good long time too.

Good truck to get it jacked for riding high. Some Georgia good ‘ol boys would know what to do with this one, the price is right.

Might have been hit in the rear end. The rear bumper isn’t original, and the “ford” logo is missing from the tailgate.

Also, look at the wear around/on the rear window moulding,..and the bed frame just below the window. The wear on these items does not match the condition of the remainder of the truck.

Everyone talks about 460 mileage…I have an F250 460 4×4, that’s been my daily driver since 2001. It regularly gets 14 mpg empty, and is as reliable as gravity. Hands down, the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.

The brick nose trucks were 87-91. 86 had recessed headlights, often called bullnose.
