It is a question that invariably sparks debate: Does the rarity of a classic necessarily equate to a high value? That is the one posed by this beautiful 1968 Dodge Charger. There is no doubting its overall condition following a meticulous restoration. However, the seller states that it is 1-of-2 Chargers produced in that model year with a specific drivetrain combination. The seller has listed the Dodge here on eBay in Lewin’s Cove, Newfoundland And Labrador, Canada. They set their BIN at an eye-watering US$254,000 with the option to make an offer.
Dodge introduced the Second Generation Charger for the 1968 model year. It followed a more mainstream approach with equipment levels when compared to its predecessor as the company sought to lower the sticker price and increase sales. This is a first-year example finished in Light Green Metallic. It isn’t a genuine survivor, having undergone a meticulous rotisserie restoration. No aspect of this classic escaped the current owner’s attention as they sought to achieve perfection. The effort proved worthwhile because this Charger wouldn’t look out of place on a showroom floor. The paint holds an incredible depth of shine, while the panels are laser-straight. The consistent panel gaps stand as a testament to the owner’s eye for detail and are probably better than they were when this gem rolled off the line. It is unsurprising that the Charger is rust-free, and that the trim and glass are flawless. The car might not be a high-end variant, but the concealed headlamps and Redline tires are nice luxury touches.
Okay, we’ve reached the point where we must face the rarity question raised by the seller. Lifting this Charger’s hood reveals a surprise because while it is widely acknowledged that the 318ci V8 was the entry-level engine in 1968, this car features a 225ci slant-six. My research confirms that Dodge introduced this motor partway through the model year, but I admit this is the first I have ever seen. I even managed to source an original sales brochure from 1968, and the slant-six doesn’t rate a mention. The first owner teamed the six with a three-speed manual transmission operated by a column shift. The seller claims that their sleuthing suggests that while Dodge produced 906 six-equipped Chargers that year, only two cars featured a column shift. However, I believe that if someone is considering splashing a six-figure sum on this car, unquestionable confirmation would be essential. The 145hp generated is significantly lower than the 230hp provided by the 318, meaning that this Charger can never be considered a muscle car. There is no information supplied on the vehicle’s numbers-matching status or mechanical health. There is plenty of included documentation, the current owner is a Mopar expert, and the seller seems approachable and willing to answer questions.
This Charger’s interior is as impressive as its exterior, although the poor image quality doesn’t do it any favors. It features bucket seats but no console. I can’t tell whether there is a factory radio, but I can spot a remote exterior mirror. The Green vinyl looks spotless, and the carpet only exhibits minor marks beside the driver’s right foot. What can be seen of the dash and remaining trim looks nice. However, it is disappointing that someone would market a car at this price and shortchange themselves with their listing photos.
The overall condition of this 1968 Dodge Charger is breathtaking, but so is its price. This classic needs nothing and would suit someone seeking automotive perfection. Interestingly, neither Hagerty nor NADA recognize the existence of a ’68 Charger with a six under the hood. More fascinating is the fact that the sales brochures I have seen also don’t mention the availability of this engine. Does that make it worth the price? It will be fascinating to gauge your feedback on that question.
Two hundred Fifty four THOUSAND US dollars!!!??!?
How’s that expression nowadays go-SMH!!!??!?
My Gen said something like “Aw ya gotta be KIDDIN’ me, RIGHT?”
Wow.
Someone get the seller a Snickers. They’re not themselves when they’re hungry
Its so ironic that an individual who was extremely frugal ordered this thing, or bought it cheap new because it was a low price tag special to lure folks into the showroom, and now they want how much???? I’m not questioning the quality of the restoration, its great. But as has been mentioned here on Barnfinds before, just because its rare, doesn’t mean it’s qorth a lot of money.
Does this minty Mopar come w the trunk full of Newfie Screech🥃for the asking price. 🥴
I’ve been looking for an old Charger with the coveted slant 6 for I can’t tell you long. I’ll pay them $245K for it and one red penny more! I know what I got…
It doesn’t look like they even offered a slant six.
Slant 6 and Three onna Tree was a rare option, but there are a few out there. But not $250K rare.
Have seen a couple of 1968 and 1969 original Chargers with the “leaning tower of power” factory installed 225 cu in. In fact while living in E Hartford CT in the early ’80’s was in discussions with a family on Tolland St to purchase said vehicle. SAME COLOR as this vehicle. They do exist!
254K of ugly. This gets the third “you’ve got to be kidding” award of 2025.
I admire that they left the Slant 6 and column stick, but it ain’t worth that kind of money. Maybe in 100 years. A friend of mine had a 69 similarly equipped, and it had factory A/C, too. He got it from the original owner. He eventually pulled the 6 and 3 spd, had a 440 built and a 4sp with a shifter on the floor. It was a lot of work, if I remember correctly, what is called a K frame had to be changed. I’d have just left it alone, or bought one with an 8.
This is up there with the ‘65 Mustang I saw in Hemmings about 2-3 years ago that the owner was asking $1 million. Uh, no.
Beautiful car, but maybe move that decimal over one digit to the left.
If someone pays this asking price, I want to meet them, because they have more money than brains.
Thats the kinda razor sharp wit that’s missing around here!
If Canada becomes 51 then you won’t have to pay exorbitant duty if the buyer is from the south
Now HIM, I DON’T want to meet.
Actually he bought Canada for 254K and they threw in the car.
250 K’s with a universal rad hose. A bit more effort please
Insane price. Slant 6? $250K means Hemi or maybe 440 six-pack. This guy is totally yanking our chains.
If he wants it, I’ve got a ten year-old pair of (washed) boxer shorts for $10,000. Just drop me a message.
I am married to a Newfoundlander. They have an amazing sense of humor. I think that might be at play here. BTW Newfoundland is an island. Shipping won’t be cheap.
This is up there with the ‘65 Mustang I saw in Hemmings about 2-3 years ago that the owner was asking $1 million. Take it to Barrett Jackson and get a reality check. Uh, not me, but good luck.
This Charger hit the trifecta, 1968, slant 6, 3spd column shift. No matter how nice, it’s hard to see someone paying that amount.
If the CA in the seller location stood for California rather than Canada the seller would be accused of being greedy.
Steve R
Is it April 1 already????
Thanks for the laugh today…on price 😉😝😂
So a beautiful heavy 3505 pound led sled body pulled by a slant six to allow young children pass when starting off at a red lights. 😎
For a mere 250,000 one can explain to Haggerdy insurance, investment banker reason for withdrawing savings…
Driving to cars in coffee where the mopar fans from a distance walks towards car smiling then sees hood up and chuckles 😉
There’s nothing wrong with thee 225 slant six. In fact, it’s a great engine. The car just isn’t worth that regardless of engine.
Hey, stop it now. It’s a MOPAR!
I believe this is a Canadian model with the 225 – the brochures were sales region specific. With a 3-speed it would be good in the snow. The price deserves no further conversation. I had a 71 2-dr Satellite with this drive train – awful in the city but did what it needed on the road with a strictly enforced 55mph speed limit in the early 80’s.
To this day Newfoundland has only about 90km of expressway from St. John’s to Cross Roads.
I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that was all 2-lane back in ’68.
It was two lane in ’65. Was stationed in Goose Bay and went down there for a conference. Had my first fresh milk in 6 months after living with powered milk.
I’m speechless.
In 1969 a customer wanted a 6 cylinder Gran Prix Pontiac which was not available. He insisted and actually got somebody in Pontiac to make one.
It was delivered to the dealer in Tampa and the customer bought it.
A few short months later the customer came back and wanted to trade it for a real GP with a V8. The dealer said nope. don’t want that 6 cyl car and that is probably the case here.
What a POS, IMHO.
Crazier then a jay bird sniffin model glue
Couldn’t have said it any better myself. Crazy town.
Maybe $2,500 for that basic car, What impressed me is slant ‘6’ with a 3 on the tree. Not all Chargers have to be racy sports cars. Nice body, nice shade of green, nice wheels with special red streak tires. I’m impressed.
This car is obviously not for sale.
Throw the price out there and see if it sticks why not? Worst thing that will happen is going on here where people are calling the seller stupid or dreaming but they are getting tons of free advertising and its getting the car noticed and talked about you have to admit that if records show there were only TWO built to this speck it does make it rare regardless of people wanting the bigger engine. I’m not sure what is more valuable a restoration or a original but the seller definitely has something cool. And with the right exhaust system it still sounds better than those import cars
I think there’s an extra zero in that price. $25,400 would be reasonable, i fyou REALLY want a 68 Charger in that shade of green.
Not even Dodge would pay a quarter-mil to put this in their museum.
Targa Newfoundland Pace Car?
Uff Da!
Interesting car in its history and that it survived intact. Maybe not worth the ask but surely worth preservation.
Crazy! A buddy of mine owned a 69 with a 383 auto with the power sunroof option in perfect condition in the late 70’s for $950! The inflation rate on vehicles these days is ridiculous.
At least I think this car gets the award for the most responses !
Sorry, I thought I was on Barn Finds not Mechum
Simply put: This guy is off his rocker with the price.
If it has manual steering and brakes and no air it’s ok because you wouldn’t actually drive a 250k vehicle anyway.
Wow those Hemi dog dish hubcaps are going for $25k a piece now? Amazing lol 😂 nice car though if i get my inheritance money before it’s sold I would buy it lol but good luck 🍀 to the seller and the buyer!
Rare? Check. Unique? Check. Cool factor? That’s up for debate. As already said, price is unrealistic.
The newfie selling it doesn’t know he is …
YOLO
Someone call Craig Jackson. Cheap universal radiator hose. Black radiator cap. This guy’s brain must be frozen up in Canada.
A friend in car sales taught me an important lesson. If a car is rare, it may mean that no one in their right mind wanted it. Rarity does not always equal value.
Here in Canada where our blade like feet have adapted well to the icy surface of the planet Newfie’s are well known for their sense of humor but not so much for their IQ. Just before covid when I still thought I might find some sort of fun car or truck to enjoy in my retirement at a reasonable price a dark green Charger 68 or 69 in very good condition came up on this or a competitive site, same spec and configuration and I thought bingo I love slant 6’s and 3 on the tree. Well it was not to be, went over 50 grand if I remember correctly and the general comments were it would be repowered.
@ David Lewandoski…..this wasn’t an option….this was std., as delivered.
Saw a slant 6 68 years ago with a floor shift. Was told only 2 of them produced too.
My cousin got out of the Army in December 67. A few months later he told me he was going to order a 68 Dodge Super Bee. I said never heard of one, he said it was Dodges answer to the Roadrunner .So what does he do he special ordered a three on the tree which looks just like the picture of the steering wheel and column shift in this car. I said why not a 4 speed he said he likes 3 speeds. Car was Silver with dog dish hubcaps, AM radio ,3:55 sure grip. First thing he does is pops off the hubcaps and paints the rims flat black.I have to admit the car looked good and it ran well . Unfortunately the car rusted away in like 15 years of driving it every day rain or shine
apologies from canada as most of us are not completely out of our minds. that price is a long shot if it was an unrestored hemi 4 speed! insanity!
this guy gives the term ” crazy canuck ” a whole new meaning
Why would anyone buy a V8 Charger (any size engine) for the same or much less price, when you could buy a whiplash giving car like this? The seller is probably counting on someone offering them 50 or 100 thou less and them thinking they are getting a deal because they beat them down on the price. That’s how that works.
The other one must be my old neighbors mom’s Charger which they wouldn’t sell. Different color but it had a three on the tree slant 6 in it way back in the late 70’s when I was trying to buy it.
That may be closer to the truth than anyone knows.
When I saw the price I thought “This has GOT TO be a Hemi…. Yea, NO.
That was my thought also, except I thought “that’s about 100K too much” so that’s why I was so amazed when I found out what it actually was.
All that coin for a slant and three on the tree? No (insert potty word/s of your choice) way.
Has anyone made an offer yet??? Can’t find any bids on the EBAY site. Guessing no one is taking this seriously?
