Worth The Effort? 1968 Dodge Charger Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The second-generation Dodge Charger desirability remains strong in the Mopar community, with even those needing extensive work exchanging hands regularly at some price.  Nicely preserved and restored example prices are through the roof, and while it’s going to be a lofty goal to get this 1968 Dodge Charger here on eBay back on the road, at least the initial investment will be low compared to many others.  This one’s in Wylie, Texas, with a buy-it-now cost of $14,800 for those seeking immediate gratification.  However, the seller is also pondering offers, and considering the amount of labor and funds that will be required after the sale, I’d probably try submitting a lesser amount first before committing to parting with nearly fifteen grand.

While no background and little other information is provided, one tidbit shared by the owner is that this Charger was originally equipped with a 318 and an automatic, so it’s not one of the more sought-after cars that started out with something bigger.  From the looks of things, it’s probably been decades since either component was present, leaving the possibility to install whatever you want under the missing hood without worry of keeping the numbers matching.  Why the 318 was removed is also a mystery, as it’s not sought-after like some of the other engines, and I’m curious if a different engine may have already been in the bay at some point before this car declined to where it is today.

One of the terms sellers often use when describing Chargers from this era is “typical rust”, referring to areas that frequently corrode in B-Bodies.  The owner here doesn’t mention that, but I’d have to say this one probably has at least what would be considered an average amount of decay, and maybe more if the platform is also taken into account.  However, some good news is that the seller isn’t trying to hide anything and provides numerous photos, including several from the underside, such as this one.  In addition to finding a drivetrain, lots of bodywork and attention down below will be needed before this one’s ready to rule any more pavement.

Hanging on by a thread is the cliche that’s coming to mind when viewing the front seats, but much of the dash is still present, although it needs restoring.  While it’s sad to see how far this 1968 Dodge Charger has deteriorated, the day will come when cars like this have completely returned to the earth, and I hope somebody with the skill set required to save this one will come forward before that time arrives.  Are you seeing much hope for a practical resurrection here?

Based on the photos and cars in the background, one would venture to say this seller is a professional.
That said, perhaps the best course of action might be to run power to the CB radio in the glove box and call for help…

It is being sold by a dealer. You’ve probably seen or heard about his YouTube channel that shows him and an employee or two going to the sellers location to inspect and buy the cars, load them then eat lunch at a local restaurant. Each weekly episode typically gets several hundred thousand views.

Nevada, if you are interested in checking out any of his videos, his channel name is Dennis Collins. The older videos are more interesting, I’d go back a year possibly more.

Thank you again Steve R.- Especially timely, as the current snowstorm is expected to last through tomorrow and I’m getting cabin fever..it’ll be the perfect distraction.

Wasnt he the guy who used to pal around with Richard Rawlings? Where they would search out classic cars and double team the sellers with ridiculous low ball offers?

Dennis seems to be a nice enough guy, but just the relationship he had with Gas Monkey has turned me off.

Plus, most of the stuff he lists on EBay or overpriced – trying to cash in on his name. He’s not the only one to do that.

PRA4SNW, the channel used to be pretty interesting, it’s lost a lot of appeal because they started to ham things up and push products over time. If you watch a video, read the comments, many are pure brown nose and over the top. Sure he probably is a nice guy, but first and foremost it’s a business to him, the show opens doors that would otherwise be closed and puts him a position where a lot of sellers reach out to him. It’s networking on steroids.

+$55,000 By the time it’s drivable. I’ve had my share of Dodges. I prefer no “Nopars” at these prices.

~15k for that?!! From what I can see, it wouldn’t even be a good parts car. Hard pass.

Yep, At the Pate swap meet. He’s a stuck up dealer. Insane price. His wagoners are outrageous.

Not worth 14k on it’s best day. Putting a flash set of wheels on it to make it look slick is not fooling anybody. He’s asking 14k for a sub 10k body.

I noticed that too. And I also noticed other adds doing the same thing for years to make a parts car look better and even sometimes stating that the rims and ire don’t go with the sale!!
