The Porsche 911 craze seems to be holding strong, with air-cooled examples still fetching good money. When this wrecked 1989 Porsche 911 came across my desk, I wasn’t so sure about it, but once I realized it was a Carrera 4 with its transmission and full 4-wheel-drive system intact, I decided to give it a closer look. Air-cooled Carrera 4s fetch serious money, and while this wreck is beyond saving, it has lots of valuable parts that could be used to repair another car or convert a 2-wheel-drive Carrera into an all-wheel-drive C4. What remains of the car is being offered here as a Barn Finds Exclusive and comes with a title.

When Porsche created the all-wheel drive Carrera 4, it wasn’t a simple task. It required redesigning the front suspension, making room for the driveline, and a transmission that could send power to the front wheels. When the 964 debuted in 1989, the first cars were Carrera 4s, with the two-wheel-drive cars still being the previous Carrera 3.2s. Since the 964 gained some weight, Porsche enlarged the 3.2-liter flat-6 to 3.6-liter. While this wreck retains its all-wheel drive components and transmission, the engine is long gone. So, if you plan to convert a 2-wheel-drive car, you will want a 1990 or later Carrera 2.

The big piece here is the G64 Getrag transmission. It’s out of the car and was presumably removed when the engine was pulled. The seller notes that the case is damaged, but they claim replacement sections are available on eBay to fix it. There’s no getting around the fact that this wreck is rough, but it does have lots of valuable parts and a title. In my opinion, the best use for this hulk is as a parts donor to repair another Carrera 4, but I’m sure there are a few gearheads out there who could use the parts to convert a Carrera 2. What do you think?
