Wrecker Needs a Tow: 1980 Chevy CK/30

There is next to no information provided on this wrecker-bodied 1980 Chevrolet C/K 3500. I just want to note that this is the first time I’ve seen a tow truck socked away in a storage unit as if it’s a vintage Maserati, made extra ironic by the fact that wreckers are typically used to remove said Maserati from the storage unit! Of course, no pictures of the wrecker outside of the unit, so you’ll have to use your imagination as to how clean the body is. Find it here on eBay with a $14,995 (!) Buy-It-Now.

The coating of dust on the Chevy is quite thick, so I’m sure it’s been parked for a while. The question is, why? A wrecker is a working truck, so it’s not typically kept around for posterity’s sake. I could see a family business shutting down or a gas station owner retiring and the family keeping the truck around for future use, or just not knowing what to do with someone’s favorite rig. The seller would be wise to back this storage unit find out and take some pictures in the daylight.

The interior tells you a few things about the previous owner. The sport-style steering wheel is an interesting “upgrade” which may reinforce the suspicion that there was a passionate owner behind this Chevy. The radio is missing but that’s really all I can find to complain about; I’m sure those door panels would respond well to a good cleaning as would the dash. The bench even looks quite clean, free of greasy handprints – a shock to find in a tow truck.

There’s just under 80,000 miles on the truck, so not hugely high mileage. The seller refers to the Chevy as a “Camper Special” model, so perhaps that’s what this truck did duty as prior to becoming a wrecker, or maybe that’s just what the VIN breaks down to and it’s been a tow truck since new. I do think the price is a bit out of reach for what’s otherwise a limited-use vehicle; however, if the seller can show us a rust-free, arrow-straight body in the daylight, maybe I’ll change my tune.

Those door panels are doing what they did, turning to chalky dust. They’ll clean up a little but they’ll never look new. Might be a solid old truck but the seller needs to put the crack pipe away. These are under powered and suck gas like it’s going out of style. This is a $6500 truck on a good day.

Can’t be bothered to push it outside. That would be a CL move not e-bay.

I don’t think that’s an ’80 dash, and by the looks of the under hood shot, not an ’80 truck.

Couldn’t decode the VIN either. I smell a rat.

I agree that the seller is quite optimistic on his price. IMO, it’s worth half the asking price, “IF” it isn’t a rust bucket and the tow features work as designed. Who puts up and ad asking $15k and doesn’t other to pull it outside for photos!?!?
My dad had an 80 GMC C30 Camper Special. It looked just like this under the hood and inside. Same color interior even. (It was silver on the outside.) IIRC the “Camper Special” had the tow hitch and trailer wiring factory installed. Not sure, but it may have had an extra overload spring above the C30. Tough old truck with a 454 and a SM465 with a granny low that would take down a house. (The only thing better was the 93 GMC K2500 I had with an NV4500 5 speed. Similar granny low, and an overdrive gear to boot.)

The 5 speed didn’t have a granny low like the 4 speed from the factory that was available I believe.

Thats an 80. The last year for the rounded dash pad and under hood looks like an 80 hood hinges are on the fenders not the firewall 1981 was first year for the flat dash and hood hinges came out of the firewall

I don’t see any clear shot that shows a missing radio. The three rectangular “pods”, to the right off the steering wheel are (from top to bottom) – A/C and/or heater vent, then the A/C and/or heater controls, the the radio head unit. The bottom “pod” is not visible in these pics.

    Yep. 73-80, same dash.

This is more than likely a rust bucket from what I can see. I’ve owned a few of these, they were all buckets and all looked like this inside/under the hood.

Does anybody else notice that the PTO appears to be engaged? Why park it like that and then let it sit for forever?
