Ford, along with other domestic manufacturers, was known to offer special regional editions of some of their most popular cars. In the late 1960s, two of those were based on the Mustang, one the California Special, and the other the High Country Special (HCS), sold in the Rockies. Located now in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, this beautiful survivor is being offered here on Facebook Marketplace for $75,000. We’re told it’s the only one that was produced with a console. As it turns out, the High Country Special dates to 1966, the second full year the Mustang was on the market. It was a promotional vehicle sold by 100 Colorado-area Ford dealers. In its first outing, 333 of the High Country Special ’66 Mustangs were produced, all built at Ford’s San Jose plant. You could get one in any body style with any powertrain, but only in three colors. Dealers installed shield-shaped brass plaques to the front fenders that featured a horse galloping across high mountain tops.
Enough buzz in ’66 brought 416 HCS to the region in 1967, and again available only in three colors. In 1968, the High Country Special was joined a few states away by the California Special, which saw much broader circulation at 3,867 total units (plus just 251 as the HCS). This year, the car copied Carroll Shelby’s “Little Red” 1967 show car hardtop, with an attractive combination of Mustang GT and GT350/500 parts. That included the multiple taillight set-up.
We’re told this auto is unique because it was the only HCS built with a console between the bucket sets. We assume the red paint and matching interior are original to the car, but the seller doesn’t elaborate nor does he/she offer any proof of the authenticity of the vehicle. The seller does say the Mustang has been featured in several magazines and even a few museums (but which ones?). When you’re trying to sell a $75,000 car, you probably should offer more details than you would on a $7,500 one. As the real thing, is this Ford worth the asking price?

WHOA! $75K???? This pony needs to fed slowly, money wise, starting around $5K & proceeding from there with a reserve price of $60K! The CS/GT usually bring decent money; same car here, just different badges!
I bought a California Special for 15K 6 years ago. I’ve upgraded quite a few things in it but I’ve kept all the original parts that replaced. Wilwwod discs,instrument panel,wood dash,Shelby console,3K stereo system,Shelby rims, new intake and 4BARREL carb(2barrel carb failed),headers and stainless exhaust,plus a couple of other things. Made it a RestoMod. Get a lot of thumbs up when I cruise in it. Got a Marti report on it.
