1 of 640: 1969 Dodge Dart GTS Roller

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Most of the Dodge Darts sold between 1967 and 1976 were family cars, many powered by Chrysler’s venerable Slant-Six engine. But in the mix, you could also find some muscle machinery for those who wanted to do more than just haul the family around. There was the Dart GT and GT Sport (or GTS), and 640 copies of the latter were built with a 440 cubic inch V8 in 1969. The seller has one of these cars, but it’s a project roller that comes with a rebuilt motor and transmission.

Except for convertibles, the GT and GTS (available through 1969) were based on the Dart Swinger 2-door hardtop. The Dart Swinger 340 was the bigger seller due to its smaller (and lighter) engine that enabled it to compete head-to-head with the likes of the Chevy Nova Super Sport. But you could step up to a 383 or 440 V8 if you truly felt the need for speed, with the latter engine rated at a whopping 375 hp.

As the story goes, the seller has owned this T5 Bronze GTS for more than three decades. The paint may be original and the body fair with rust in a few places in the sheet metal. The interior was white with black accents, so it may have been quite attractive when it was new with Rallye wheels to boot. It’s a true M-code car, meaning a 440 V8 came along for the ride. Both the engine and automatic transmission are out of the car and have been redone, though no mention is made of numbers matching.

Some “hard to find” parts are included along with a new interior that we assume the buyer will have to install. We surmise this car has been idle for quite a while and things have begun to accumulate around the Dodge. Located in New York City, New York, this Mopar is available here on craigslist where the ante will be $40,000 OBO. You’ll have a lot invested by the time you restore this Dart, but you’ll have a rare muscle car in the process. Kudos to Tony Primo for this killer tip!

Good luck. Seems like another project offered at “done money” pricing. That quarter panel looks a mess.

Bet this Dart was quite the looker with the grunt to match back in it’s day. Eye roll on the seller’s “40k or higher bid,” line. I don’t like sellers that play that game, or ask for people to submit offers. Next thing you’ll hear, Joe Blow offered 42 for it. Put a price, stick to it, honor whatever deal is made. You want an auction, stick it on eBay or BAT. Not hard.

$40k, WTF! Half that number is a good place to start. The body work alone will cost you a cool $10k.

This is one of my favorite MOPARs but that rust on the rear wheel arch, rockers and quarter panel is way worse than the photos show and probably the same on both sides but the seller has not posted even one photo of that rusty rear wheel arch. I agree with 19Tiger65, 20k on it’s best day. If it were numbers matching, it may be worth another 5k but that’s it folks.

This is a very special car, I see the reason for the 40 k, I think this was a 383 car delivered to Hurst for the 440 ? Tach on the console so people in the back seat can see it?

Yup special , No I don’t have 40k for it

Having owned a 340 version of the same Dart, I still would have a difficult time deciding this owner’s intent to let someone have some leeway towards really restoring it?

Cool dart. I had several 340 69 darts. I bought a 71 340 duster from the neibors back in the late 70s.got that home. Then a week or so later for free they had a 69 dart sport/gt 340 4spd so i got that home. That day i got it my grandpa got home(lived with gparents). Boy was he pissed at me.I had to give it back! Neat car and pretty nice.Early in the 80s i saw a ad in the local newspaper. 69 dart 2 door. I called and it was a 340dart gt sport.said it needed work. $100. Steering was all messed up but I got it for $75. Ran good. the problem with the steering was a loose steering box.neat car.
