1 of 645: 1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Pace Car

Since its first year on the market, the Chevy Camaro has paced the field at the Indianapolis 500 a near record nine times. Though 22 actual pace cars were used at the 1993 race, Chevy built 645 replicas for public consumption which we believe includes this low-mileage example. From a private museum in Kalispell, Montana, this rare car is available here on craigslist for $18,750. Our regards to Pat L. for another amazing tip!

Chevrolet has been a frequent contributor in the pace car game. Besides the Camaro, the Corvette has made nearly 20 appearances at the storied annual Indy event dating back to 1911. As you might expect the SS and Z28 Camaro models would usually be pressed into this service with the latter showing up in 1982, 1993, and 2014. All of the replicas came with a 5.7-liter V8 rated at 275 hp with an automatic transmission (in most cases). Besides the upcharge for the Z28 itself, Chevy tacked only another $1,000 for the replica option (the seller has the MSRP for this one).

We don’t know a lot about the history of this car. It’s traveled just over 5,000 miles in 30 years and has lived in a temperature-controlled space along with several other vintage cars, all perhaps Chevrolets. The car looks to be in spotless condition and the seller has loads of “swag” about the vehicle that the buyer will reap the benefit of, which is a special touch that you don’t often see. The seller and its previous owner looked at this car as a collectible and it’s been treated as such.

Before you start showing it off to your friends, you’ll want to do the kinds of maintenance that a museum-kept automobile like this never sees, i.e. change the oil, clean out the fuel injectors, and consider putting on a new set of tires. While we see one of these cars pop up here on Barn Finds every so often, they’re usually not in the condition of this one or have so few miles.

I’d like to turn this into a real road rocket, but it’d be a crime to bespoil the sheer ’90-ness of this time capsule. Even if you’re not into the whole pink polo with the popped collar thang, it’s such a perfect capsule that it should not be changed

Owned one of these pace cars for a few years. Only car I ever had that traveled I17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff with the cruise set, and never once had to downshift going up the hills. The motors in this generation of Camaros pull like the big blocks of old.

Looks very cool up front with the aftmkt headlite covers – almost like it has hidden headlites – perhaps Chevy should have offered real popups in an RS package.
I’m not too crazy tho about the exposed plastic cowl & wipers, & huge windshield on this gen.
