1 of 69 440 Six Pack! 1971 Dodge Super Bee

Mopar fans; take a seat. If you favor the final year of the classic Super Bee, the only year in this body style, then buckle up, because this amazing specimen in Akron, Ohio ticks off nearly all the boxes. For starters, Dodge made a mere 69 of these 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bees with the V1A 440 cid (7.2L) Six Pack and automatic transmission, and this one retains its entire original driveline. This highly original Dodge comes to market here on eBay in a true No Reserve auction. Better yet, on top of being parked in ’76, never painted and barely fussed with, this killer Bee has been “mechanically refreshed” and drives “like new.” The seller has really thrown down the gauntlet with an opening bid of $41,999. As we go to press that challenge rests unmet.

Sometimes called the “poor man’s Hemi,” the 440-6 gave up a mere 35 horsepower to the mighty 426 cid Hemi in 1971, for half the price according to hemmings.com. While many muscle cars peaked in 1970, the V-code 440 topped by a trio of two-barrel carburetors made a wicked 390 HP. Aside from maintenance items, shiny paint on the intake, and maybe the battery hold-down, this engine compartment looks highly stock, and carries the limited scars of a claimed 80,000 mile car that spent most of its life in a garage.

The listing includes what looks like a wire-brushed or paint-stripped fender tag. The decoder at mymopar.com confirms what you see here, a GA4 Light Gunmetal Poly Super Bee. The tag also affirms the V1X Full Vinyl Top in black and the sharp L37 Concealed Headlamps.

The C6XA: Trim – Charger, Vinyl Bucket Seats, Charcoal/Black  interior must have been horrible since the “restoration” accomplished inside removes it from contention as a survivor-class vehicle. After this work it’s more of a half-restored car; perhaps the only complaint, and that’s a stretch. If the seller’s assertion of “totally matching numbers” checks out, this is one super-awesome find. Would you enjoy this semi-survivor as-is or take it back to Day One?

Seems to be a mostly complete and intact car with matching numbers drivetrain but needs somewhat better pics to properly determine its value. Not a true no reserve auction as seller is telling you the reserve up front instead of leaving you to guess.

To paraphrase Billy Joel, I like this just the way it is.
I like driving them better than showing them.
But…with the Mopar market, maybe this one needs to be restored right now. Low production and desirability always makes for a sence of urgency.
    Neat ride either way!

Liked the look of the 68-1970 version best. 1971 is when this and the Mustang got really large and the power started getting choked. Nice feature !

Just for a laugh among’st tough times, go back to 1974 when the national speed limit went to 55 mph. Stayed there ’til 1987. Just try it on an interstate and see how it feels. Noooooo !

You will get run over at 55 mph! I recently read an article about the number of drivers being cited for driving over 100 mph here in Pennsylvania and those are just the ones that got caught. My dashcam has captured a few Talladega – style wrecks here on PA 28, a state road with a 55 mph limit.

85 -90 mph here in San Diego is the norm, has been for years. Until rush hour,, which is absent now due to the shut down. Those that think it’s safe going 55 or even 60 become a road hazard instantly, especially those fools who try it in the fast lane. Plenty go 100 plus, or do the zig zag lane change thing at a 100 or more. 55 was always about saving fuel and had nothing to do with safety as was told to me by my ex CHP drivers ed teacher, despite the bs “55 saves lives” tag.

The interstates in South Dakota changed to 80 quite a few years ago. Plenty do more than that, but the state patrol are quite diligent nabbing them for doing slightly over (like 2-3mph over).

They based the Super Bee on the Coronet for 1968,69, and 1970. Then went to the Charger body for the last year. That was just dumb, I never cared for the extra long Charger body, Just me. This is a nice find with the drive train ordered like this, I am sure it will a good home.

Lol better check your numbers before you make a statement. The 71 is actually shorter than the 68-69-70

I do not know how a vehicle that spent “MOST OF IT ‘S LIFE IN THE GARAGE” got to be in this condition. And if you had not told me it was Gunmetal metallic I would have sworn by the pictures it was green. Look closely at the back window what looks like an Ohio Temporary Plate. Not bad asking 10 times the original cost for what I estimate was a $4500.00 car originally.

Could be a seller’s permit, that’s what South Dakota requires now when selling a vehicle (even private sale). It works just like when you buy a car from a dealer.

Just my opinion, but I always thought these had too much engine. To quote Captain Kirk, “Too much of anything, even love, is not a good thing.” (Okay, maybe a paraphrase)

This old Six pack ‘Bee was never meant to live a pedestrian life in any way shape or form. Day 1 meant it wasnt prepped yet for the rough day 2 lifestyle which led to day 3,,, clapped out, blown up, impounded by the local authorities, etc etc. I like this car a bunch even though I’m not a big fan of this body style, the triple deuce 440 was a killer of a street engine.

If I’m going to spend big money on a muscle car it won’t be one with an automatic on the column.

I agree kelly, the console was the first thing I looked for. No way I’m paying big bucks for a column shift.

There should have been a law that you could not get this engine and transmission combination on the column: It should be a choice of two: Automatic with console mounted shift or 4 speed manual on the floor.

Problem is…this is a 1 of 69 car. It’s going to end up costing at least twice what you pay for it after Graveyard Carz restores it.

But, they did offer it that way, and there were plenty of buyers.
Not sure why, but it happened.

The last Superbird I saw up close at an auction was a 440 with automatic on the column. Might not be my first choice, but I woudn’t kick it out of my garage either.

Actually, Police Chargers are column shifted and are a much quicker and more controllable way to shift.

Most police Chargers are V6’s. A buddy is in the CHP, none of the ones they use for patrol duty have a V8.

Mine has the V6. 300HP is enough for me.

What makes this a unique car is it is the only documented V code GA4 Super Bee in the registry. I run a small page dedicated to GA4 Mopars, as it is one of the most understated colors made

C’mon lottery ticket for Saturday night!!! I prefer the 1970 as far as the unique Super Bee bodystyle but I’ve owned a 71 and 73 Charger so I’m more than okay with this! Sure a floor shift is cool and I love them but I’m totally fine with a column shift. The reality is that with an automatic all it does is let you grab the shifter and pick a gear. A customer at the body shop I worked in almost 40 years ago let me drive his Barracuda with a 440 6 pack he put in – What a rush!!! If this car isn’t hiding any real rust I’d gladly hand him that 42ish grand and be gone in a heartbeat. I’d freshen it up with a driver quality paint job and kiss it goodnight every evening and gladly feed that thirsty engine everyday. I’m not rich but even right now I can afford to drive a gas hog if I like the car enough. Yes, sign me up please. :)

Really nice find but a little odd to me to see a 440/6 pack with a coulmn shift and no consol!! Maybe it’s more rare that way!! I don’t really know but still a cool ride that I’m sure would throw you back in the seat and pass everything but the gas station!!!!
