1 of 901: 1970 AMC AMX Go Pack Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The AMX was a GT-style, 2-seat muscle car built by American Motors from 1968 to 1970. Many think of it as a shortened Javelin (much like the Gremlin was to the Hornet), but that would be shortchanging the hot car. The seller’s example is a 1970 edition with a 390 cubic inch V8 (disassembled) and the desirable “Go Package” option. Located in Tacoma, Washington, this rare project is available here on eBay for $11,900.

At the time the AMX was on the market, the only other U.S.-built 2-seater was the Chevy Corvette. But the AMX was a muscle car, not a sports car, and sold just 19,134 units in three model years. In 1971, it became the performance option on the 4-seat Javelin. The 1970 version with a 390 motor and automatic was rare then and now, as barely 900 copies rolled off the assembly line. The seller’s car decodes as one of them.

This car has/had the optional Go Package (or Go Pack), which differed from year to year. Available only with the largest engines, the Go Pack usually added dual exhaust, a heavy-duty cooling system, front disc brakes with power assist, upgraded suspension, a limited-slip differential, special wheels, and body striping. When this AMX was produced, it also came with factory A/C, but that hardware has since flown the coop.

We’re told this machine started out with green paint, but someone preferred white a long time ago. As a car from the Southwest originally, rust doesn’t seem to be problematic. The driver’s door has been replaced due to an altercation with the garage. The 390 is in parts and pieces, and someone began a rebuild before giving up. Also, the interior is going to need an extreme makeover. The seller bought the car to restore, but found a 4-speed to work on instead. If you’re an AMC fan, do you have the time and resources for this one?

Just a bit different viewpoint and no crticism of your comment intended 8banger. IMO today it is very straightford to put in a 5 speed tremec and have better driveability than the old 4 speed and in most cases increase the car’s value as long as you keep the matching 3 sp auto.in a preservation crate. I’m not quite certain why more people don’t think of this option when they first see an auto tranny car, especially when the auto car is virtually always cheaper to start.

I hope the reason for no bumper wasn’t because all the focus was on the GoPack and not enough on the WhoaPack.

When working at a Pontiac store in the early ’70s. We had 2 of these traded in for TransAms in the same week. Both were 4 speed cars. One was a 360 and one was a 390. So,,, I got to drive both back to back. Both were a blast to drive. The 390 had more grunt, but the 360 was no slouch either. I have always liked these and would love to have one. Not this time however.

take some decade(s) off my life’n I’d go for this just to get into one.
I really like the idea and reality of the rig. Too bad it was only 3 yrs.
    Unfortunately,
Back in the day I looked a lill sideways at my ♀︎ friend’s ex’s. It only
came to town twice. Wish I offered something to own it myself.
Only got into them since seeing one here 8 yrs or so ago.
That got me off on wks of research. Fan Boy now,
    55 yrs too late

A buddy of mine had theAMX with a 390 and he had put a healthy cam, worked the heads different intake and carb it was a 4 speed car. It was darned near admirable just how quick that car was. But you had better be just as fast to get off the gas as you were getting into it because that short wheel base got squirrely mighty quick!!

Buddy of mine in HS had a Hornet Scrambler 360- except someone slipped in a 401 Police Special. 4 speed with 4:56 gears. Didn’t take long before no one would race him. You could see where he was starting from- but you had no idea where he’d end up

11.900 is too much for this project
You’ll be lucky to break even.when you’re done. Great project though if you don’t mind being upside down on it if it’s done right.
