We rarely get to see the combination of an affordable, modern classic with one-owner lineage and some special features that truly set it apart. This is one of those times, and I feel like someone is going to get a smoking deal on a soon-to-appreciate SUV. This is a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition that is listed for sale here on craigslist by the original owner who has serviced it himself since Day 1. It has 150,000 miles but the description reads like a textbook version of everything you want to hear from a seller. The asking price has been dropped to $10,000, and that seems quite fair to me considering the condition on display here.

The Orvis relationship was a compelling idea from the two organizations at the time, but I don’t know if it was ever a roaring success. The Orvis brand is one I was quite familiar with growing up in the northeast and later moving to New England, but I can’t say it had the same name recognition elsewhere. It paired an absolutely stunning interior with two exterior color options, Moss Green or Light Driftwood. The seller is correct that Light Driftwood – which his truck is – is far rarer than the dark green color. I will say, the later ZJs like this one, look handsome in green with gold wheels. The real story here is how nice the interior finishes still are, especially for a truck with higher miles.

But you have to appreciate cosmetics in order to feel like this Orvis edition is worth buying. When you find an Orvis with some miles on it and a trashed interior, all of the value of the rarity factor is effectively gone. If you don’t dig the interior colors, then the added premium of a survivor Orvis like this one doesn’t add up. The Jeep is still worthy of the asking price, in my opinion, for its robust standard equipment list, especially with the standard 5.2L V8 engine. This mill produced a respectable 220 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, and the seller has replaced the water pump, serpentine belt, spark plugs, and alternator under his care.

Other improvements include a Van’s big brake kit, which the seller contends addressed one of the major shortcomings of the model. The front axles have also been replaced, and the AAV has been replaced twice. The listing notes that the paint has been protected with “aircraft paint protectant” since new, which is the first time I’ve seen such a reference in a listing. Buying vehicles from obsessive owners is the best way to enter into a relationship with a higher-mileage vehicle and have it be a fairly pleasant experience. If I were in the market for a ZJ, I’d be all over this one. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Barney for the tip!

Owner went w a more robust oil .. interesting. On my old inline 6 Ford 4wd w the 300 I always used 15-40 Rotella. That motor never made a strange noise and purred, dead reliable.
Price Reduced – $9,000
What is the AAV that has been replaced twice?
