1952 Volkswagen Zwitter: A Very Rare Car

1952 VW Beetle Zwitter

Update: David was able to get more photos of this Zwitter from the seller. They have been added to the image gallery below!

The Zwitter is a very rare VW, produced for less than 6 months. Zwitter, a nickname from English VW fans, translates to “hermaphrodite” in English. The Zwitter is a blending of components of the split window and oval window VW. It’s a split window with the single glove box dash of the oval window model. Zwitters have some unique parts which are hard to find. This Zwitter listed on craigslist has been in storage since 1969 and is complete and original. It has had the pan repaired and it runs well although it pops out of third. The asking price is $16,000 which may seem like a lot, but the last (restored) one sold at auction for $60,000. What do you think this one might be worth?

It’s worth all of 16K. Where else you going to find one? I would buy it but no room and don’t have a spare 16K laying around….haha.

With the current insanity about original crappy condition being so wonderful I’d certainly think long and hard before I started in on a restoration…

  3. David C

That’s a fair asking price. These are so hard to come by. Prices and values are actually still increasing.

    I doubt it will sell.

By the owner’s choice not lack of interest.

There isn’t 40 thousand worth of work left so this is too good a deal to be legit. In my opinion this is a promotional post to get people talking and the juices flowing.

Hmmmm, “promotional post to get people talking and the juices flowing”? I’m always hoping for that, but when I saw a Zwitter listed for a reasonable price I had to write it up. You never see them for sale except already restored for crazy money. Some flipper will probably jump on this. I hope it will at least be someone with a little class. By the way, exactly how would it go telling the wife you were bringing home a hermaphrodite?

        lol

it is still for sale. not sure i like what i see in the photo of the pan repair. the new owner will more then likely restore it so that issue would get resloved. great find.

I know next to nothing about these or any other import car for that matter, But I love these early split window cars. Never heard of a zwitter. Not even sure I know how to tell if I was looking at one. But I can tell you most Pontiac. Lol.

I’ve had VWs and been on The Samba, but this was a new one for me, I can tell you most Chevrolet.

I have one of these, they are indeed oddballs and tracking down the unique parts is very difficult!
