Up In The Air: 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air 4x4 2

“What should I do with that old four-door rusting away out back? People only want the two-doors, so there is no sense in selling it… I could part it out? Nah, that would be a waste. Hmm, I could turn it into an offroader. Yeah, that’s it!” Could this have been the conversation that went through the head of the owner of this 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air? We have seen a Caprice and even a Mercedes with transplanted 4×4 chassis under them, but this is the first time we’ve found a tri-five that had undergone the “treatment”. This one apparently has the frame and running gear from a 1941 Military vehicle, so it is ready for some serious abuse. Find it here on eBay where the seller is asking $4,500. The whole concept seems odd to me, but what else can you do with a four-door ’57?

Another entry from the ‘YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING’ file. The first question I’d ask is: ‘Why?’ There’s nothing wrong with a 4-door. I’ve got four 4-doors and love them all. I think they all deserve some TLC. However, we still live in a free country and can do anything with our cars that we wish. I guess I can’t expect everyone to like my car choices so why should I be expected to like theirs?

There was a purple 57 bel air convertible on a 57 4×4 chassis running around the SF bay area in the 90’s. I didn’t get it then, and I certainly don’t get it now… I’d love cruising in a 4 door bel air…add long as it’s original.

There is a company that makes all the necessary sheet metal to take a 4 door hardtop like is one, and transform it into a ’57 convertible. If I had to choose between making this car into a 4 X 4 or a convertible…. Well, there would be one more convertible on the streets. The 4 door hardtops are one of the more rare ’57’s out there. I can appreciate the effort but I may not agree on the choice.

just because you can do something doesnt mean you should do something.

i like the idea of converting a 4 door into a ‘vertible. jw454 do you have the name of that company?

Google C.A.R.S. Inc. and you will find the company and the project where they built a convertible from one of these.

I want to do this to a 57′ wagon really bad. But for now I will stick to my 71′ burb.

I dig it. In places where we have more winter than summer, this would be a great way to drive a classic year round. I’ve got an el camino I’m restoring and the frame needed some repairs and more than once has the thought of taking a 4WD chasis and putting it under. This ’57 makes perfect sense to me.

Thats a 4 door hardtop…….worlds away from a post sedan. I had a 56.canary yellow. It’s kinda neat in a twisted sort of way
