Four-Door Nomad: 1958 Chevrolet Nomad Wagon

This 1958 Chevrolet Nomad has been sitting for many years, and it’s a car that will require a full restoration. The bones of the car look to be quite solid, so this is a project that could produce some fantastic results for the new owner. Barn Finder local_sheriff spotted this Nomad for us, so thank you so much for that. The Nomad is located in Jonesboro, Louisiana, and is listed for sale here on eBay. There has only been one bid on the car, and with it now standing at $3,500, it appears that the reserve has been met.

The owner says that the car is what it is, which is an old car that has been sitting for a number of years. He does say that the frame is solid, but there is rust that will need to be fixed before the car is back to its best. I can see it in the floors, the spare wheel well. the bottoms of some of the doors, the bottom of the fender on the driver’s side, and the lower quarter panels. It’s a lot, but this is not the worst that we’ve seen on a car here at Barn Finds. It is definitely not beyond repair. It will just take some time and patience.

When I took my first look at the interior, I spotted a lot of trashed trim, but there was something else that really caught my eye. The seats look like they have clear covers on them, and the upholstery underneath looks to be really good. The dash also looks to be complete and in good condition. We can’t see the headliner, but even if that’s trashed, the foundations for a nice interior certainly seem to be present in the Nomad.

The owner claims that the drive-train is original, which means that this should be a 283ci V8, which is backed by a 2-speed Powerglide transmission. The owner does say that the engine doesn’t run and that he has made no attempt to make it run. This might be a good thing because the new owner will probably want to give it a thorough check before attempting to fire it up. The only thing that disappoints me is that he doesn’t tell us whether the engine actually turns freely.

Restoring this 1958 Nomad is not going to be a job for the faint-hearted, because there will be a fair amount of rust repair work required. However, there are also a lot of possibilities with the car, and once restored, it could be a very nice vehicle. We’ve probably all seen cars in worse condition that have been revived. So, would you be willing to take it on?

Same as I said about the ’57 two door wagon… not a lot of these around. If it can be bought at a reasonable price it looks solid enough to rebuild. Last one of these we’ve seen was years ago at a car show. It had the 348 in it.

Good deal for the price and even better than the 57 given completeness of parts & trim too. Lots of welding here though but that’s par for the course.

The front bumper looks to be fairly decent too which is much better than the 57 Nomad a few pages ahead on BF.

I’m waiting for the comments that all Nomads were two doors. That changed in 58 & four door top of the line Chevy wagons retained the Nomad nameplate.

Surprised to see this car in the yard of a Mustang collector.

You’d be surprised at how many people call my Yeoman a Nomad when they see it. Then, I have to explain about the differences and the 4 doors.

Nice job, Philip-that’s a real keeper!
Blue Flame, 283 or Big block 348 motor?

Today we have an excellent page full of interesting cars. This Chevy wagon takes me back to my childhood. One of my classmates ( we were 11) dad had one of these but with 348. His first brand new car. He was one of those tough old men that drove a logging truck in Northern California for a living. My friend Sid bragged about how fast the car was, which it really wasn’t, but to an 11 year old it must have seemed that way.

Someone with good welding skills could make a great sleeper or hotrod here.Lots of metal work ahead, still seems very salvageable for the right guy.
Spotted a rat rod (but not THIS rough) 58 longroof driven by a very enthusiastic mid-20s guy at a car show 2years back. Rare cars and well worth saving

Thanks Nevada. It was a 283 auto with partial a/c when I got it. The a/c parts were sold off, and I couldn’t save the 283, so now it has a 350 with 3 in the tree. The body was better than this one, but the interior was completely shot.

This car definitely has the 283 because the 348 would have scalloped valve covers. This looks like a good buy if the price stays down. I love the Sinclair trailer in the background, it brings back memories.
