Maybe I have not purchased enough cars in my life, or maybe I have loftier expectations or different memories on how online car selling worked. This 1964 Volkswagen 21 window bus listed on eBay seems more like a Craigslist ad than an eBay listing. The bus is up for sale with a current bid price of $7,100 at the time of writing and is located in Climax, New York. Thank you, Jamie, for the tip. You can see it here on eBay.
There is not a single mechanical detail described in the listing. There is a photo of the engine, so there is something there. The bus has a salvage title. As popular and rare as this type of bus is, it is hard to determine if it is worth restoring or not. Looking at it, there is a major amount of rust, especially around the top of the windshield. It also looks like it has been pieced together because the driver side door is a different color.
The inside cabin photo shows a lot of rust, and wear and tear beyond repair. There seem to be parts littered throughout the rest of the van, and it doesn’t look like the side door is closed, based on one of the photos. It seems to be exposed to the elements which are not helping its case. Clearly, two bidders think this bus is worth something. Seeing this bus reminds me of the recent Matchbox Superfast 50th anniversary 21 window bus they just made.
It also reminds me of a Hot Wheels team transport diecast of a T2 VW pickup in flatbed form with a Porsche on the back. It would be really cool to see this bus on a small truck frame, maybe even a custom chassis as a dually, and be an ultimate track toy camper/hauler. That would be an awesome project that someone with more money and skill than I have will have to attempt. Let it be known though, that if I had those resources, I would attempt that.
Anticlimax.
Someone will buy it.
Maybe that person, or someone later in the ownership chain will restore it.
Then, someone with $100K burning a hole in his or her bank account will buy it.
Not me, in any of those spots. I just don’t get it, at least when the stratospheric values are a part of the equation. Fun/campy? Yes. $$$? Uh, Nope.
Here we go again,,,
It’s already at $7,500 with plenty of time to go. I just don’t understand this. I know it’s apples to oranges but I can get a 1997-01 540i with a six-speed in very nice condition for this money. I guess I’m just really out of the times? I don’t know whatever.
I’m with you on the 540i Superdessucke. I will subsribe to this post, I am sure of some great comments!
The crowd that wants this bus can’t really remember the 60’s and 70’s for obvious hallucinogenic reasons. Not sure how they eventually scored the money to buy one.
Have you ever bought hallucinogens?… they ain’t cheap.
Have you ever manufactured hallucinogens?… they are cheap and easy to make.
Now you know how they score the money for these vans. And yes a van is big enough to cook drugs in… don’t ask me how I know.
I kinda prefer the organic mushroom variety of hallucinogens.
Happy trippin’. Keep on truckin’.
You’re going to need a shovel to pick up this mess. They rusted badly in any climate but after any time in NY I can’t believe it’s salvageable
Another clapped out rusty over priced VW van but no worries, someone will pay top price for it. Why? because it’s a VW van that’s why……..Wow!
I’m with BF’s member “Howard A” on this one.
Not enough metal left to under that shell to make a tuna can!! Not something I would buy!!
Guys, you need to put this in perspective. I’m not a VW guy, but the 21 window buses will bring and do bring $75-100k when restored. That’s the same money as an LS6 chevelle or Ram Air IV GTO. Would you pay $7500 for one of those in this condition? I think you might.
This chicken coop is going to be able to fit in a garbage bag when they try to move it. To be the devils advocate, this guy found this thing returning to nature, got it for a song or less, and listed , take what he gets. up to 7500. I don’t get it but whats left of it is crackers. Good luck to someone to pony up the coin. The guy might change his mind when its freed from mother earth. More pics and cleaning up the vegetation would have been nice.
Cheers

Very sad to see a type 2 gone to pasture. Some very desireable OEM pieces still there though from the pictures shown. $10K?? Not for me.
someone who has the time and knowledge of metal work may take this and use the reproduction metal panels that are out there to make this bus respectable again. Not me of course but someone..
