Same Owner 30 Years: 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Ford could do no wrong in the mid-1960s with the introduction of the new Mustang. The peak year was 1966, when 607,000 of the new “pony cars” found homes. Yet there was one rare body style in those numbers – the fastback. Only 6% of all 1966 Mustangs were fastbacks, about half as many as convertibles were built. The seller’s father’s ’66 FB has been in the family for more than 30 years and needs restoring (at least partially). Located in Surprise, Arizona, it seems to be reasonably priced at $5,500 here on craigslist. A nod goes to Barn Finder Barney for this tip!

While overall Mustang sales went up by 8% in 1966 over the “official” 1965 model year, fastback production was down from 77,000 units to less than 36,000 copies. We can find no reason why that would have happened except that everyone seemed to want the basic coupe. This faded example left the factory with a 289 cubic-inch V8 (which one?) and an automatic transmission. The Ford hasn’t run in seven years, but “ran when parked.”

The seller’s father bought this fastback in the 1990s, but we suspect declining health has prevented him from using or working on it since. So, the painful decision has been made to let the car go to someone who can bring it back to its former glory. The Rangoon Red paint is well past its prime, yet we don’t see rust trying to consume the Ford. The matching interior seems okay, but with only one photo.

At 100,000+ miles, no attempts have been made to get the Ford running again. The 289 is not locked up, so perhaps cleaning out the fuel system, giving it a tune-up, and a new battery might work wonders – or not. Note there is an air conditioning compressor present, perhaps aftermarket. This Mustang could be a diamond in the rough if there are no “surprises.”

It’s gone. $5,500 is a crazy low price for a fastback

I saw this on Craigslist a few days ago and thought that this is too good to be true. I did check out the phone area code for Maryland and that is correct for the ad, however. I thought that this would have to be checked out very quickly by someone in that area, and very cautiously. Interesting how they MAY have set the trap by suggesting that they knew nothing about the car other than it runs and they have the title. On the other hand, now I want to know for sure what happened. Is this a very rare deal?

Missed the CL listing to verify, but background looks suspiciously CA not AZ.

Well, I think I answered my own question. The ad “was flagged for removal”. And the ad may have appeared in different city Craigslist ads. As I said above, I checked the phone number, and it agreed as a Maryland number in a Maryland posting, not AZ or CA that time. Be very cautious. Greed may cause an error.

Too bad that scamming is only getting worse, but at least some people are on it. And, good thing we have the consumer protection fraud agency.

    Oh, wait.

This sort of fake ad is always best to dealt with through the hosting platform, in this case Craigslist or eBay, Facebook or whatever forum. They are more motivated and can act quicker to take down fraudulent ads than any government agency.
