Big-Block Muscle: 1967 Plymouth GTX Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Listed on craigslist, this 1967 Plymouth GTX 2-Door Hardtop is the real deal, a genuine RS23L-coded car originally equipped with a 440 cubic-inch V8 and console-shift automatic transmission. The seller calls it a “proud old muscle car”, and even though it currently sits as a project, there’s no mistaking the potential here. Thanks for the tip Curvette!

According to the listing, this GTX has been owned by the seller for many years and is being offered strictly as a restoration project. It does not currently run or drive, and both the engine and transmission are missing. However, the seller is willing to include a rebuilder 440 engine and a 727 automatic transmission for an additional cost if the buyer wants to take it back to its original powertrain setup.

Structurally, the frame rails are solid, and the floorboards and trunk are described as good, which makes this a decent starting point compared to many unrestored Mopars of the era. The glass is all present, and while the car needs paint, it’s at least complete enough for a capable restorer to bring back to life. The GTX hood is included, though the ornamental scoops are missing, those can still be found new or used online.

The seller notes some rust behind the rear tires, plus minor spots elsewhere, and a few small dents and imperfections typical of a 55-year-old project. Inside, most of the interior is there but in need of cleaning and restoration. The passenger door is stuck, the side window cranks are seized, and the brakes don’t work, all of which will need attention. Despite that, the car rolls freely and can be winched onto a trailer for transport.

One key detail for potential buyers: the car will not be sold with the wheels and tires shown in the photos, but it will come with factory steel wheels so it can be moved easily. The seller emphasizes that it’s sold as-is, where-is, with no warranties or guarantees.

For anyone searching for a real RS23L-code 1967 GTX, this is a rare opportunity to build an authentic big-block Plymouth from the ground up. With solid bones, matching parts available, and a clear title, it’s the kind of project that could easily pay off once finished.

Would you restore this GTX to original specs or turn it into a custom street machine?

Too bad this doesn’t have its original drive train. It might actually be worth something. No warranty? Not much to warrant.

Terrry and I think the same, no warranty, dang, the deals off. The ’67 GTX was kind of the unsung hero of the late 60s, completely overshadowed by that tin can, the RoadRunner/GTX. Mid 60s Mopars were simply the best, and the ’67 GTX was kind of the end, as they cheapened up the Belvedere considerably for the Roadrunner.
There is no question how appealing a car like this can be,,,if it was done. Apparently people would have no issue coughing up $40 grand for this car coming down the auction chute, but I just don’t know how many would spend half that, and the heartaches that go with a restoration like this, why bother.

Good parts car or maybe a project if you already have another parts car to work with. As is it’s meant for someone with lots of time and experience. I have a project just like this, but not that far gone. Good luck to the seller. You already have what’s needed to restore it so why not do it?

here we go again. seller lists the car with pics then says you don’t get the wheels. take pics of the car with the wheels that are going with it i have a motor and trans, but you got to pay me more money if you want that. not sure about the rest of you but that really gets tiring when you read that in these ads

The wheels are a deal breaker? It is what it is. The guy didn’t have to mention the motor but he did. Tiring? Please!
