Older Restoration: 1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The GTO began as an extension of Pontiac’s mid-size Tempest/LeMans line-up. But demand far exceeded corporate expectations, so it was promoted to series status in 1966. With minor styling changes in 1967, the car continued to deliver results for John DeLorean and crew, including this nicely redone convertible that’s numbers-matching but needs some brake work. Perhaps landlocked in a garage in Odessa, Texas,  this drop-top is available here on eBay where there is no reserve and the current bid is $26,200.

A 1967 GTO convertible with an automatic transmission might be fairly rare today. Out of 81,772 total units built, just 9,517 had canvas folding roofs. And since more than half of all GTOS had automatics, this could be one of maybe 5,000 assembled. Considering that a lot of muscle cars in the 1960s were ridden hard and put up wet, it’s likely that only a few hundred are still tucked away somewhere. The seller’s example wasn’t seldom used as the odometer is ready to flip over at 99,875 miles.

Pontiac’s 389 cubic inch V8 had been retired after 1966 and the 400 replaced it. Also, no Tri-Power triple carburetion was offered any longer, either, so a single 4-barrel carburetor no doubt sits atop the seller’s car’s engine. We’re told it runs great, but the brakes need bleeding. Considering the value of these autos, you have to wonder why the seller didn’t just get the brake work done before putting the car up for sale, perhaps ensuring it would fetch “top dollar”?

We’re told the paint, canvas top, and interior were all redone – but that was more than 30 years ago. Yet it has all held up well from what we can tell, and no rust has crept its way into the metal parts. Perhaps this car belonged to a senior member of the family who has passed on and the seller now has the responsibility of finding it a new home (just speculation). The seller’s description is not particularly thorough, but it looks like a nice GOAT.

It looks like a nice car and has some good options. It has a tilt column and appears to have both power antenna and possibly factory headrests. Last time the seller ran it through an eBay an eBay auction it’s high bid was $25,200 which is surprisingly low.

The headrests are the correct style, with aftermarket stitched covers. This car may have a reclining passenger seat, when ordered it included headrests. The headrests could also be ordered separately. It appears to have had the factory power antenna as evidenced by the dash switch, and correct location on the quarter, but unfortunately the OEM motor assembly and mast are aftermarket. It also has a tilt wheel and a remote outside rear view mirror. The original Quadrajet is missing, it has a Chevy Quadrajet on it. Paintwork isn’t of the highest quality, and lots of overspray. It appears to be a very solid car.

      It’s a 4 barrel… however it is from a Chevrolet.

Russ wrote that it’s a 4 bbl. Car has a ton of potential. Nice start. As far as frowning about the car not receiving pre-sale preparation.
I honestly feel that the person who bids seriously on this car is not going to be too concerned about whether the brakes have been bled or the windows are clean. A serious buyer will be setting up a appointment to view the car.

Looks like this one is complete and has good bones, nice opportunity for someone to enjoy as-is or refurbish. GLWTA.

I agree with Steve R, nice looking car. I’m not a fan of the automatic, but it would make a nice summertime cruiser. One comment that I would make is that I would be willing to wager pretty good money that the brakes need a hell of a lot more than “bleeding”. (And my agreeing twice with Steve in one day could be considered an oddity as well. We don’t always see eye to eye LOL)
