1967 Rambler Rebel 550 Cross Country Wagon

I’m in New Orleans as we speak and I couldn’t find any vehicles on the local Craigslist that looked interesting, or even remotely inexpensive. But, I ran across this 1967 Rambler Rebel 550 Cross Country Wagon just west of here in Prairieville, Louisiana, about 18 miles southeast of Baton Rouge. It’s posted on Craigslist for $6,000. There is no “or best offer” or “will trade for___” listed, but hopefully the seller watches enough reality tv (Cajun Pawn Stars?) to know that almost every price is negotiable, even if they say that it isn’t.

1967 was the last year for the Rambler Rebel as in 1968 they became the AMC Rebel. That may not seem like a big deal, but almost any vehicle collector will tell you that a milestone (first year, last year, etc.) vehicle tends to be more valuable. Maybe that’s what the owner is thinking of here with what seems like a very enthusiastic asking price on this one. In researching this car I ran across this old eBay listing from a year ago for a somewhat similar car that sold for $5,000! Although it had a six-cylinder and a cool, modified 5-speed manual transmission, it also had AC and it looked like a perfect-looking interior and shiny paint. Hopefully the seller of the Louisiana car will be up for some dickering on the price, either that or the old eBay car was a fantastic bargain.

The base Rambler Rebel was the 550 line with a two-door sedan, four-door sedan, and wagon. The 550 Cross Country wagon had standard vinyl upholstery, a drop-down tailgate, and a roof rack. This car has the optional rear-facing rear seat and side-opening tailgate. The seat looks brand new to me but, unfortunately, that’s the only interior photo. The 770 models had 3M simulated woodgrain on the sides. AMC also offered three very, very cool special edition wagons in 1967: The Westerner, the super rare Briarcliff, and my personal favorite, The Mariner. This light blue car could be turned into a Mariner tribute car.. hmm..

This Strato Blue Metallic car also has AMC’s optional “Torque Command” 290 V8 with around 200 hp. The owner mentions that it has an under-dash AC unit, which you can see the compressor for here, but there are no interior photos other than the one of the third seat in the rear. The engine looks pretty clean, but is the underside of the hood white instead of blue? That’s odd, I’m guessing it may be a replacement hood, but the exterior, faded blue color seems to match so I don’t know what’s going on there. Are there any Rambler Rebel fans out there? How about any Rambler Rebel Wagon fans? What do you think about the price on this one?

    Nice car. little expensive for a rambler, although prices have been going up. I really like the 63/64 models better. In fact been looking for one 63/64 wagon. They are all either really nice or junk can’t afford nice and junk is junk.

C’mon, for an AMC buff ( of which there are several here, me included) it doesn’t get any better than this, provided you like wagons, of course. 1st of all, could this be a ’68, with side marker lights.(?) Just a wonderful example of a car no one ever thought of saving, if there was anything left to save, that is. AMC’s were well known for having “rust from the factory”. I’d much prefer the 6, as for a car like this, it would be fine for me. AMC was always kind of the “Rodney Dangerfield” of cars, just can’t get no respect. Great find here. I’d love to have it.

      Where in the heck did you get the ” AMC’s were well known for having “rust from the factory”? Apparently you were born way after any of these cars were built and an unfortunate product of the modern educational system. That quote was popularly made in regards to Studebakers, not AMC’s. In the 60’s AMC cars were subject to a full car dip in zinc coating, IE GALVANIZED. It took the rest of the auto industry almost 40 years to do this as they do today. Also they had ceramic coated exhaust systems which were guaranteed not to rust out or would be replaced free of charge to the original owner. My dad had his 1963 exhaust system replaced free of charge in 1976, a time when most of the competitors cars had rusted out years before.

      The 67 Rebels all had the side marker lights in the rear, a year ahead of 1968 when they were required both front and rear for all cars in USA.

    This is definitely a 1967 Rambler. My family had one, so I grew up in a Rambler station wagon. How you can tell – the 1967’s had door handles that stuck out, the 1968’s door handles were recessed. Man, what I wouldn’t give for a 1967 Rambler wagon like this. I have attached a picture of our family wagon, in black and white, but it was brown in color.

    I had a 67 rambler rebel station that I bought from the original owner in Napa California for $100 an the car never left Napa an now I’m looking to buy another for decent price an it had this car had the 290 an car had never ran on freeway either an I miss mine an it was the blue original paint but yeah this one is a little pricey
