Instead of creating another 356 Speedster clone, the builder of this replica focused on one of Porsche’s wildest competition cars – the 908/03. The real thing was developed for races such as the Targa Florio and Nurburgring, where its small size and low weight gave it an advantage. Porsche’s strategy worked, with the 908/03 scoring victories at both events. This tribute is being offered by Giordano’s Vintage Motors in Carnation, Washington, with an asking price of $85,950.

The original car used a three-liter flat-eight and finding one may be next to impossible. Instead, this replica is powered by a professionally rebuilt Porsche 911 engine. It started out as a 2.4-liter that has been built into a 2.5-liter short-stroke and is fed by Weber carburetors. Power is sent through a Porsche five-speed transaxle. This setup might not provide an authentic 908 soundtrack, but a lightweight race car powered by a hot-rodded 911 engine still sounds pretty entertaining.

This isn’t just some kit car with a fiberglass body dropped onto a Fiero chassis. Instead it uses a custom steel tube frame patterned after the original 908/03. The seating position has been moved back about 12 inches compared with the original race cars, and a front crash structure has been added for additional protection. It even gets scissor-style doors, a hinged rear clamshell, and a removable nose. The Martini-inspired graphics finish things off nicely and can be removed if they’re a little too flashy.

There’s still some work to do before heading for the starting grid. The seller says the car needs final race preparation, an alignment, more suitable rear wheels, and racing tires. They also mention that SOVREN has invited the car to participate in its vintage racing events. That’s important because a machine like this wouldn’t be much fun without a place to race it.

Porsche only built 13 908/03s so buying a real one isn’t exactly easy. The seller suggests that this may be the only 908/03 Spyder replica in existence. That fact and the ability to actually participate in vintage racing events makes this one very tempting. You could buy a nice 911 for this kind of money, but just think about how you’ll feel when you pull into the paddocks in this bad boy!

So many different time frames represented in the pics. And an odd pic of a 3.2. But it would be fun at the track!
