1971 Hornet SC 360: Angry Insect

1971 Hornet SC 360

Only 784 SC 360 Hornets were made in their only year of production, so this is quite a rare insect! This car is located in Concord, California and is available here on eBay where the auction stands at just over $10,000 with no reserve. With the high (ok, relatively high) performance 360 cubic inch V8, the Go Pak like this one with a functional “ram” air scoop, limited slip differential and a four-barrel carburetor, this lightweight car would go! This particular one has been enthusiast-owned (note the license plate) and even has the optional air conditioning for us warm-state types. While there is some rust (the seller notes it hasn’t always been a California car) it doesn’t look too bad, and the ad notes many new and newer components such as seat upholstery, headliner, and cooling/AC system components. I think this would be a neat car to place amongst the Fords and Chevy’s at your local Cars and Coffee!

What a great color. It’s hard to make green interiors look good but this one does it. Too bad about the rust bubbles. Sweet little car.

i drove a hornet with the 304 V8 and it was fast. this would be real fast but since it is not body on frame rust would be a deal breaker. AMC was really trying hard back then to change their image. what i remember the most about hornets is that the first year base model had vacuum wipers.

Great little car with good intentions, but “relatively high performance” does not translate into “relatively high dollars”. For that kind of dough I’d expect at least a manual transmission and no structural rust… I like “uncommon” cars and bikes especially this with great performance. AMC products always get my interest.

Nice looking car. I agree, a 4 speed would be more valuable and more fun, but this would be a fun daily driver. Auto, power steering and AC… yeah I could do that. I am sure it would surprise a lot of folks from stoplight to stoplight.

Very rare. This was the replacement for the ’69 SC/Rambler, but never took off. Too bad, it had all the right numbers. Didn’t see too many of these at the Kenosha homecoming last summer.

If it stays right around this kinda money, it’s a good solid deal. I disagree with relatively high performance, these cars in stock trim can be tuned to run circles around cars like SS396’s and 340 Mopars – into the mid or low 13’s easily. That’s legit by any yardstick.

For whatever reason my favorite AMC, with just the blend of style and econobox. Cool.

so cool on so many levels. yes a 4 sp would be better and iirc you would never get comfortable in those seats but this is not for cross country journeys. the only other way it could be better? a sportabout with the same go juice and hood……

I have one of those in my garage right now… all original and complete, 99k miles, from the original owner who bought it off the dealership lot just before joining the Army in 1971. When I got it, it still had old fashioned Army gear in the trunk… It needs a complete restoration now, but the seller also gave me a photo of it when it was brand new… Eddie Stakes said it’s one of possibly six with this color/carb/trans combo….

Very few of these left. I love it! Way out if my price range. I do my own wirk at home and would think nothing of taking this on. My bank account on the otherhand would argue with me. Outta my range.

Sounds to me like the sort of car that could be characterised as an exitable dog “I’m a fast, revvy, sporty thing. Yes, yes I am.”
