The Marcos name is synonymous with a passion for building light sports cars with respectable power plants, but unfortunately, the enterprise was never stable enough to be called a commercial success. This 1971 Marcos GT here on eBay has a Buy-It-Now of $12,000 and is clearly a project; making matters worse is the seller doesn’t seem to know much about the car’s past or if any additional parts come with the sale. While the engine source changed throughout the years from Volvo to Ford, this example is said to have a Volvo inline-six, but no word on whether it’s original to the chassis. Curiously, this Marcos is for sale in Stratford, Connecticut, an area with a history of autocrossing events and airplane manufacturing, so I’d love to know more about this car’s past and who owned it previously. That’s going to be another project for the next owner, in addition to resurrecting this British dalliance of small-scale sports car building. Does this Marcos’ rarity justify the asking price?

1971 Marcos GT: Great Expectations

The seller and the title call this a 1970 Marcos 1600GT, but that’s a 6-cylinder Volvo engine in there so it’s really a Marcos 3 litre. He says the engine turns but the car is stuck in gear, and there’s a long list of parts that are missing, along with an area of fiberglas gone from the middle of the hood. From the title it looks like the seller has owned it since 1993 and that it has sat unused outside since then.
A $12K buy it now? I don’t think so.
This is the same seller who had a Marcos that was cut in half 2 weeks ago. That story sounded like BS. This car is worse and is asking much more for.Fool /money = a bunch of parts. The only thing worse is what people think rusted out 356’s are worth. Crazy money for a VW with 2 carbs and a cam. And ugly to boot. At least the Marcos has cool looks and handles better.
I like Marcos’s. But not this one, certainly not at anything close to that price. Pass. (and for me to say that about an oddball British car is saying something…)
I saw this car running last Sunday at a shop in Milford CT. The guy had the nose open an was working on the engine compartment. I asked him if it ran so he started it up. Runs like a new car but haha it doesn’t move. He said he was starting at the front and working his way back. Neat car I’ve never seen one. Good luck to this guy he has his heart into this one.
