1971 Pontiac Formula 455 HO 4-Speed

Gold is a popular investment and here is proof! This is a 1971 Pontiac Formula 455 that was originally equipped with the most powerful Pontiac engine available in 1971 and backed by a 4-speed transmission. The car is documented by Pontiac Historical Services (PHS) and is one of 166 produced in 1971. Unfortunately, the original engine is not in the car but the seller provides a detailed history of the car here on eBay. The car is located in East Greenbush, New York, and is currently listed with a Buy It Now Price of $64,000. There is also an option to make an offer. There are only 2 days remaining in the listing.

The black interior of the car is original except for the headliner and door panels. The dash is said to be soft and crack-free. The car spent much of its life in Nevada before being shipped to the east coast in the late 1980s or early 1990s. The current owner has spent some money restoring the car to stock including sourcing a date code correct Muncie M22 4 speed transmission and 15-inch honeycomb wheels. The Pontiac Formula could be ordered with a 350 cubic inch V8, a 400 cubic inch V8, a Y code 455 cubic inch V8, or the 455 HO engine.

Under the hood, you can see that the factory ram air system is intact. The original motor has been replaced with a 1970 Y code 455 cubic inch V8 engine that has been bored .030 and breathes through #15 heads. This probably develops the same or more power than the original. The seller states that he can source and build a proper 1971 WS 455 HO engine for the buyer for $15,000. That might sound like a lot but that would probably be a good deal in today’s market.

The gold paint was recently laid down in 2020 and the car has the correct factory exhaust tips for the dual exhaust. The only non-original sheet metal is the front valance. The seller states that the undercarriage is clean and the car is only driven on nice days. It appears to even have the correct tires mounted to the factory honeycomb rims.

My brother, had that exact car, he bought it new. I was in Endicott NY and what a rusted car in a very short amount of years….NO holes, but one solid body of rust, it was like the paint fell off it and someone painted it in pure rust! Correct me if I don’t remember correctly, but I think it had a 3 speed manual with a Hurst shifter, and that is the way it came.

Very nice and so much better looking than a Camaro. Birds from this generation get far less respect than the same Camaros. Truth be told, a correct 71 455 HO will smoke any 71 Z28. Love the honeycomb, but they are very heavy. He can’t drive this car much in East Greenbush. I used to live nearby. It snows 6 months every year and the roads are salt mines.
