Endura Nose: 1971 Pontiac LeMans Sport Convertible

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In 1970, Pontiac sandwiched another moniker between the LeMans and the GTO. Called the LeMans Sport, it was more than a regular LeMans but less than a GTO, yet you could equip one closer to Pontiac’s true muscle car. This 1971 drop-top runs but doesn’t stop and it could use some work. It’s not numbers matching but does have a 4-speed manual and a few other desirable options. Located in Northwood, New Hampshire, this Pontiac is available here on eBay for $6,300 (Buy It Now). Thanks for the tip Larry D!

The demand for convertibles was starting to wane in the early 1970s, and Pontiac was no exception. In 1971, they only built 3,865 copies of the LeMans Sport with a canvas top, and the seller has been told this edition is of 1 of 69 though we don’t know how that determination was made. It may be the combination of options, which began with a 400 cubic inch V8 and a 4-speed, power windows and top, posi-traction rear end, rally wheels, and more. The 400 is gone in favor of a 350 which may or may not need work although it does run.

From what we can tell, the interior looks good while the body will need a lot of time spent with the sheet metal guys. As a suggestion to future sellers, you should take photos of cars in landscape rather than portrait mode as that will show more of the car and less of the surroundings. To help with the bodywork, the car will come with an extra right front fender and a pair of rear quarter panel skins. It has already been fitted with a new fiberglass hood.

This LeMans Sport has the optional endura front nose so the car not only had some of the performance characteristics of the GTO but also some of the looks too! Once you get this Pontiac restored, it might make an interesting conversation piece in a sea of 1968-72 GTOs.

Bummer about the 350, but probably a relic of the days when these were plain old used cars. I had a 73 Cuda with a 440 out of an old motor home. Whatever was in the junkyard when you needed it. You can take advantage of the shared GTO available parts market. I like the 71s and 72s the best. It won’t be cheap but would make a pretty freshen up as opposed to a full restoration.
