Apart from one fender, this 1972 Mustang Mach 1 is said to wear its original paint! The car has been garaged for the past 33 years and has recently received some work. It’s listed for sale here on craigslist and can be found in Merrick, New York (which makes the original paint and body that much more surprising). Thanks to Pat L. for sending in this pony car find! The seller has placed an asking price of $23,500 on the car.
The 1971-73 Mustangs are the largest early Mustang by far, although the “Coke bottle” shape is still pleasing to the eye, especially in SportsRoof (fastback) form. Mach 1 models further emphasized the long shape with horizontal striping and contrasting color rocker panels. Most were equipped with the “Magnum 500” wheels shown here, and they really suit the car well.
My next-door neighbor had a 72 SportsRoof when we were growing up (quite a contract to my ’66 Triumph TR4A) and I remember noticing that Rick’s rear visibility left something to be desired (it was not helped by the fact that the rear was “jacked up” with helper springs). This car just looks “right” to me with the stock stance, outline white letter tires, and period “Medium Lime” metallic paint.
Apart from some mild damage to the driver’s seat upholstery, the interior looks amazingly nice for a car with 90,942 miles. A good upholstery shop could repair that seat rather than lose the originality. While some of you (and me) would rather see a manual transmission, perhaps the automatic is more in keeping with the larger car. I do remember my parents shifting their Mustang T-handled automatics manually, so I’m sure some fun can still be had.
Underhood the car is a little dirtier-looking, but this is a Q-code 351 cubic-inch Cobra Jet V-8, which was introduced at the beginning of the ’72 model year and was rated at 266 horsepower. Bear in mind 1972 was the first year for SAE “net” reduced ratings which lowered horsepower ratings across the board; the engine would have been rated higher under the previous testing procedure. The seller reports that they have gone through the fuel system and brakes recently, so I’m presuming the car runs and drives well considering the price. By the way, the price is approximately what I found on several value guides as an average for this year and model. I hope someone buys this Mach 1 and continues to enjoy driving it!
Seems like a decent ask for it if it looks how it’s presented. And yes, that view through the exaggerated rake of that back window is like peering through a mail slot.
These final renditions of the Mustang before the introduction of the “Pinto in Pony clothing” cars had more blind spots than a winding mountain road
351 offered decent hp and good torque for 72 should be a nice cruiser.
Looks nice, no air cleaner?
Nice mach 1 Mustang with Q code 351 C CJ, the 266 Net Hp equates closely to the 290-300 HP of the 69-70 mach 1 with PS & all engine accessories.
I’d have bought if it was a 4sp. Had many Fairbanks & B&M autos in the past & nothing beats having a stick. Damn!
Agreed Al. Its 99% of the time a deal-breaker
Looks like a great car , lots of options I would kill for in mine.Nothing like survivor cars . Fold down seat looks new, 351 CJ with Ivy glow car best looking to me .
Nice clean Mach I WITHOUT an ugly rear spoiler, for once.
Was going to buy one of these back in the seventies when I was much younger. Same engine, automatic but it was white. When Dad and I test drove it he said “The only thing that back window is good for is to spot low flying airplanes”
Reminds me to watch the Eleanor get away scene again. Best big mustang driving ever! especially the accidental lamp pole
I always thought this era Mustang is a good looking car. If the top went down, that would be the icing on the cake for me.
