1973 Volvo 1800ES: Kicked Outside

1973 Volvo 1800 ES

Much like the displaced Mercedes-Benz 450SL entry from earlier this week, this once-cherished 1973 Volvo 1800ES on eBay found itself outside after the owners couldn’t keep it running. A sad tale, because the seller’s mention of how much the car was loved before it got the boot seems to be validated by the condition of the interior. And, the car comes with service records going back to the original owner! It had been garaged all of its life up until 5 years ago when it got parked outside in eastern Washington State. This Volvo – a model that is steadily increasing in value – should be brought back to life before it’s too late and that surface rust becomes something more terminal. With no reserve and an opening bid of $600, this could be a great project to pick-up if the current owner’s story checks out.

There are way worse places than E. Washington for a car to sit outside for an extended period of time. 5 yrs is nothing!

Not sure why the hood looks that bad after just 5 years, but otherwise matches the story quite well and probably a steal.

I just can’t buy the story.

If this was such a great car, and was so well pampered, why on earth would you park it outside in the weeds and let it sit there for 5 years? Now the brakes, injectors, radiator, hoses, and mice all need to be gone through. Why didn’t they research it on the internet 5 years ago and sell the car when is was supposedly so great?

Obviously it was a bad decision to set this car outside and not run it for 5 years. Then they put it on ebay with a shaky description and even worse photos. I’ll buy cars from people who treat cars like this, but I won’t pay very much, especially on ebay. 2500 is all I’d risk on this car.

The cost of a cover for the car and concrete blocks to put it up on must be prohibitive.

Damn, that’s a cryin’ shame! The Volvo 1800ES is the most beautiful station wagon (estate car, shooting brake, whatever you want to call it) that was ever made. one of those rare instances where the wagon version is better looking than the coupe. Dark green is one of the best colors on the car although there really isn’t a bad color for it. This is one of those cars I’d like to own sometime in my life, although now isn’t the right time due to other financial constraints. Strip the paint here at home then have a pro refinish it… If I could afford all that.
