1978 Chevrolet G20: It’s a Van, Man

If the recent proliferation of vans on eBay is any indication, this is a market that’s heating up. In addition, Car & Driver‘s feature this month on the biggest annual van owners gathering in the Midwest reveals there’s still a lively culture supporting the van lifestyle, but young blood is needed to keep the flame alive. Maybe that’s why this 1978 Chevy G20 is seeing some healthy bidding action here on eBay with plenty of time left in the auction. From the airbrushed graphics to the fully-furnished and carpeted interior, this van has everything you need to be a party on wheels. I’d take mine without the artwork, as it looks sweet enough with the aero kit and fat basketweave wheels. I better watch out – I’m talking myself into owning one of these things.

    The bong on the table is a quality touch to really bring home the true van experience.

      Hey man, know your audience. :D

      See, the problem with ownin’ a bitchin’ van like this is that suddenly you find yourself at more AC/DC concerts than you know what to do with.

      I mean, it’s not like I’m one to talk about vans, what with the UltraVan I own…which, may or may not have had bead curtains while it was at…Burning…Man…..

      OH MY GOD I’M ONE OF THEM! \o/

    As a Halloween freak I would love this just to sit in it while the wife hands out candy to the kiddies and I scare the heck out of them jumping out of it with my hockey mask on and a machete in hand, the bong might even interest me later in the nite.

    His feedback leaves a bit to be desired…the term “your mileage may vary” comes to mind.

    Bought my first van in 1973, been a severe van nut ever since. Hence the name;
    What are you in your van? boxdin of course.

    Like the shorter wheelbases better. And yes I was into these. Worked at a van shop in 79.

    I’m surprised no one has yet referenced the song lyrics to Sammy John’s hit song, “Chevy Van”. I can’t see a van from this era without thinking of that 1970s hit song.

    G20 = 3/4 ton truck in name only. Those of us who owned one called them either a “Half-Ton +”, or a “3/4 Ton Lite”, or a “5/8 Ton”.
    My ’94 would go through wheel bearings…. including ruining an axle since the rollers used that as the inside race. Struggled to tow a 2000 pound single axle trailer, and it had the 350 engine. That year also had a big throttle body fuel injection unit, that would malfunction if the fuel pressure dipped even a little. I carried a couple of extra fuel filters, got really good at swapping them out very quickly in a parking lot.
    Personally I think that all of the conversion or hippie vans should have been built on the G30 chassis.

    Do like the crazy airbrush job though….

    And I am surprised that no one has questioned the mileage yet. Brake pedal pad looks kind of worn…

    I had a good laugh at Anastos bong comment. Laughed even harder when I saw it on Ebay. I ordered a 1973 Dodge van, black with no windows. Did the usual interior mods. No custom graphics, just chrome side pipes and American mags. I liked the clean look. I called her the Dodge Lodge. I had soooo much fun in that thing! And then you could use it for real things like going to the track or hauling parts. They are so versatile I see why there is a following. Back to the bong, you needed that monster cause the weed was so bad back then.

    I would love this thing. Bong and all. Great swap meet/drag strip/cruise in/work/shop van for me. Do like the look of the shorty van better but this is perfect.
