1978 Dodge Xplorer: Adventure Seekers

dodgeexplorer

There’s a lost art form on the automotive landscape, which concerns the lack of domestic vans that are converted into easy-to-navigate camper vehicles. This ’78 Dodge B300 Xplorer here on eBay looks like a great way to get into camping out at motorsports events for only $4,300. Of course, with a full range of amenities making it possible to cook and sleep while on the move, you could easily use this for a hunting vehicle (as a previous owner did) or simply travel the countryside without the stress of trying to find a hotel (as the seller did). It’s even got a hot water heater and roof-mounted A/C! I love the ’70s colors, which could pass for being an official vehicle of the Boston Celtics basketball team. How would you use a camper conversion like this survivor-grade Dodge Xplorer?

Would love to have taken it on an adventure when it was new….

    …now, not so much..

it would take some serious cleaning before I’d consider taking even a 3 minute nap in this baby…I’d lean toward ripping out the interior and starting from scratch…

    If the Van’s – A – Rockin’, Don’t come a knockin’!

Gut it, and make it into a real party/camping van.

I think Roadtrek would disagree with you about camper-vans being a “lost art.” :)

Wow seems to be in great shape! And well designed (a cooktop exhaust fan!)

I love that he has the literature still!

Since much of my mis-spent later youth and too-far into adulthood was spent on the road as a musician, I can attest that one finds oneself stuck in plenty of motels that make this look positively snazzy. Bomb it, scrub it, and love the good times. I like it.

Huge advantage here for any possible buyer is that this was built on the B30 one ton chassis. That alone gives me a good feeling about the potential of the van as a camper and/or tow vehicle. I wish it had the bigger engine, but in reality that is easier to swap out than the more substantial frame, suspension and other running gear. Too many class B motor homes were built on half ton vans, and I think that the 3/4 ton chassis and running gear is a minimum.
Someone crazy might even opt for a diesel Cummins conversion….. :-D

Certainly this could use some updating in the interior and systems, but it also appears to have excellent bones, and is therefor a great place to start for an economical travel/camp abode. I’m not the big MoPar fan, but still…

$3251, and the reserve and BIN are gone. 2 days left.

Someone will own this, I hope it gets good use, somewhere near it’s intended original purpose. (Not gutted and used as a work van)
