1986 Toyota 4×4 SR5 Turbo Xtracab Pickup

Having just about every option available at the time, this 1986 Toyota 4×4 SR5 Turbo Xtracab pickup is in one of the sweet spots of the collector market right now: 1980s and 90s pickups. It looks like a really nice example and it’s listed here on eBay in Iva, South Carolina. The current bid price is $9,100 but the reserve isn’t met yet. Let’s check it out.

This is a good-looking truck, at least condition-wise. We know that not everyone is into vintage Japanese steel but with so much going for this one as far as being an Xtracab 4×4 turbo that’s rust-free, it’s worth checking out. First things first: the seller says that this SR5 is 100% original and has never had an accident, but a quick peek at the vehicle history report shows a front-end accident in 1989. We don’t know the extent of that accident and maybe it was just a bumper or fender or something, but it’s not 100% original and accident-free, although they say that the fenders and hood have the original VIN stickers on them.

Otherwise, it’s a great-looking truck, despite having almost 300,000 miles on it. They say that it’s rust-free and it looks like it is, other than surface rust. Even the underside looks clean. It was originally from the Pacific Northwest and then migrated down to Georgia for a couple of decades and has resided in South Carolina for the last two years.

The interior looks fantastic with those special Turbo seats and speaking of options, this one comes with an automatic transmission, no 5-speed here. Bummer, but the steering wheel makes up for it, sort of, with another Turbo logo. There is also a sunroof and the seller mentions just one small crack in the dash and it’s right at the top and it is small. There is no photo of the Xtracab seating area which is disappointing.

Why I didn’t buy stock in Interstate Batteries two decades ago I’ll never know, they’re everywhere. The engine is Toyota’s 22R-TE, a 2.4L inline-four which with the turbo gave it 135 horsepower compared to 105, a very nice boost. Every vehicle should have 25-30% more horsepower. They say that it rides and drives better than expected for a 35-year-old vehicle and it sure looks clean. Have any of you owned one of the two-year-only Toyota SR5 turbo pickups?

Very nice. A rare truck in today’s market. 22R-TE’s were produced in 86 & 87. These trucks have really appreciated in value in recent years.

They were introduced in late-1985 and several sources list 1985 and 1986 as being the two years that they were produced. However, I think you’re correct on the two model years being 1986 and 1987.

Be sure the timing chain has been replaced. The single row chain in this vintage 22R stretches and can snap, causing major damage!

I had a 86 SR5 Turbo, basically the same as this one only blue. I sold in 2000, I should have kept it and rehabbed it. Whoever ends up with this one should have a great time with it

My second vehicle was a blue SR5 turbo single cab with a 5 speed. Loved the truck it hauled a 7’ cabover camper a lot of years in the PNW camping and hunting, my son learned how to drive in it. On my last Toyota now bought new 2011 tundra crew max Rock Warrior super white. Just hit 50,000. Miles

My friend had one and found out that replacement turbos are unavailable or impossible to find. No available sub parts and the Turbo shop could not repair the existing one.

The discrepancy regarding no accidents/accident reported, should be a big red flag. Looks nice, etc., but who knows? Maybe a deep dive into the inspection process is warranted here before any cash changes hands.
My 84 model was totaled in front end hit, was able to repair it to look as new. But that was my experience. YMMV

300,000 miles and a automatic, it does look clean for its age.

Turbo SR5 available for 86 and 87. 86 was auto only and 87 was 5 speed only. 86 has custom seat backs with “Turbo” embroidered. 87 had just the nicer buckets. 87 got power mirrors. both years had power antenna and an upgraded stereo. Canadian models all had chrome wheel opening moldings and the one piece door glass where I see some American models had the door vent glass. Rims are slightly different and in 87 the transmission has a larger main shaft and better rear end. Only 122 were shipped to Canada in 87 making it a very rare truck

I have a 1986 4×4 SR5 extra cab turbo auto trans. I was told it has a merciades transmission and a Baja package truck. It has turbo on the doors and bucket seats with shifter in floor with power button on side of shifter. Power windows and come out with lift kit and bigger tires. It was special ordered when built. Never see another one like it and wonder how many were in production in 1986

Are you sure on this I’m next to positive mine was a single cab SR5 5 speed, locking hubs, glass wing windows, color coded bench seat with pull out armrest, turbo model/with turbo gauge, and striped dash.
