Jeep is one of the brands that seems to have an endless supply of special edition models, and it can sometimes be difficult to tell what options are included with various trim packages. Sometimes they’re performance-based, sometimes they’re cosmetic, and sometimes a combination of both. One example is this 1991 Jeep Cherokee Briarwood Edition. With only 60k miles, this Jeep is in excellent condition. It’s listed for sale here on eBay in Bridgeport, Connecticut. At the time of writing there have been 69 bids bringing the current bid to $16,600 with 2 days left on the auction.
With the Cherokee being such a popular model, it’s not entirely unheard of to find a low-mileage example, and they often bring big bucks for the seller. However, this one certainly has to be one of the nicest 30-year-old SUVs on the road. The seller has done a great job of photographing the exterior, interior, and engine – everything appears very clean and well-maintained, and the tree and wreath in the photos add a fun feel to this Jeep.
Green paint, faux wood panels, and a tan interior definitely says “1990s” but it is a great combo here. The paint looks excellent, with only a couple chips along door edges. I didn’t even see any rock chips on the hood, surprisingly. The wood panels look very good too, with the exception of a scratch on the driver door side. The pin-stripe looks perfect as well. The new, slightly oversized tires accentuate the off-road look, although with as clean as the underside is I doubt this Cherokee has seen much off-road duty.
The interior of this SUV looks just about brand-new. The only (very minor) flaws I saw were a slightly discolored panel above the center console, and rear seats that appear to have been folded down for an extended time, causing some divots where I assume the seatbelt latches were. Hopefully after some time in the sun that will resolve itself. The continuation of the wood grain inside is a nice touch ,and this is an interior I would love to spend some time in. You can see that there are lots of power options – seats, mirrors, windows, etc. You’ll notice on this pic of the dash that the temp gauge appears to be running a bit hot, so that may be worth taking a look at.
The engine is Jeep’s venerable 4.0L inline-six, and it’s paired with an automatic transmission. The seller says there are no leaks. The engine bay looks original without any DIY wiring or other projects, which makes sense for only 60k miles. This Jeep appears to need absolutely nothing, and is ready for its next owner. Would you take this on some trail in the mountains, or stick to paved roads?
I didn’t know they made a Briarwood edition in the Cherokee. Always wanted to find a Cherokee Wagoner and swap out the Chevy 2.8 V6 for the AMC 4.0. It’s no surprise it’s bringing good money. Rare model in really nice condition.
Well, alphasud, I used to own an 86 Cherokee Wagoneer with the 2.8L and a 5spd. It had a 3 inch lift. And it was this exact color. The only thing was the wood grain was already off when I got it, but it still had the wood looking trim. It ran great though it was carb, and took a couple of cranks to start it if it hadn’t been started in a while. I traded my 76 Chevette for it then I went and traded it for an 84 Mercury Cougar a year later. Maybe if I had known you before I traded it for the Cougar, I could have let you in on it.
Maybe running a little warm from the wreath on the grill?
Lovely, but I’d feel guilty driving it and using it how it was meant to be used, off road. Destined to be a Sunday driver or gather dust in someone’s stupidly vast collection. Sad. Cars are meant to be used, not hoarded, enjoy it, whether it’s a 911 or a Cherokee or a chevelle.

Frank, I agree! I owned a 89 and it never let me down in every condition. When the Grand Cherokee with the V8 came out, I waited a year and then bought one. Terrible mistake, the 89 was a much better vehicle and I wish I had it now..
I had a 1991 Cherokee with a 5 speed manual transmission and had to put in a new clutch at 99,000 miles. I drove it to 276,000 miles and never put another clutch in it. I used to haul about 4,500 pounds behind it and on several occasions I had to put tire chains on to help me move a load. I ran synthetic oil in it and after 10 years I sold it for $500. That American Motors six was a GREAT4 liter engine.
At one point in time, I had one, all three kids had theirs, 3 or 4 of their friends had one and my garage buddy had one. Never did get organized enough for a group shot. I always said, “one more Cherokee and we’d have an Indian Reservation”!
I still have mine but it’s been stuck on a rotisserie for a few years after getting new floors. TMP, Too many projects…

My 89 Cherokee 4×4, metallic gray with gray cloth interior. One of the many vehicles I wish I could have kept, even too this day I miss it.
Very limited undercarriage pics and of what I can see, it looks like it was rattle canned black. The floor pans were not all black like that. That aside, appearance wise, this is about as cool as you can get for an XJ. I have a basic “sport” model and I’m envious of this fake plastic wood (for real), gorgeous green and interior luxuries.
It’s sale price may surprise some.

Actually, my 86 Jeep Wagoneer mentioned a year ago by me was an 85-model year. It was in nice condition when I had it. I imagine it might have met its demise upon the next owner.
