1st Place Award Winner! 1934 Ford Roadster

Vintage Fords make a regular showing here on Barn Finds and the conditions span everything from soup to nuts. Some are worn-out originals, some are less than worn-out originals, and of course, there are modified examples that run the gamut. Today, we have an Antique Automobile Club of America, first place, senior winner in the form of a 1934 Ford DeLuxe Roadster – and it’s a beaut! Located in Owasso, Oklahoma, the owner has now made the big decision to part with his prize winner. It’s available, here on Barn Finds Classifieds for $99,500.

Ford’s fortunes, following the start of the Great Depression, had started to mend by 1934 as their total production volume of 564K units put them in first place – it was a whopping 68% improvement over 1933’s volume. As for the DeLuxe Roadster volume, such as our subject car, 6,180 found first-time garages.

The seller tells us that this roadster has undergone a body-off restoration, one performed to concours standards and following the correct factory specifications. It’s not said when the restoration was performed but this Ford has obviously been sparingly used and properly stored. Anyone who has followed my ramblings will know that I never have a discouraging word to say about green, and this roadster, with its contrasting tan folding top and brown leather upholstery, makes for a magnificent presentation.

Powering this beauty is a 75 HP, 221 CI flathead V8 engine wearing the correct aluminum cylinder heads. If nothing else, it is a beautifully detailed engine and appears to have experienced conservative use at best. There is no mention of its operational characteristics but there’s no reason to assume that it is anything less than like-new. As is usually the case, this “flattie” is backed up by the standard three-speed manual transmission.

The interior of this roadster, along with the rumble seat enclosure, is resplendent in its brown leather upholstery and trim. Promotional material from the time indicates that leather, is in fact, original to the Roadster (and Ford’s 1934 sales brochure depicts this very model in the same exterior/interior hues). The instrument gauges appear to have been fully restored to their original state, including a very period-correct-looking speedometer/odometer that has registered just 615 miles.

Needs? Absolutely none, this is probably the best example of a 1934 Ford DeLuxe Roadster on this planet. It’s definitely a show car and not one that can be used to any significant degree lest its condition be degraded (as in Jay Leno’s famous comment about his ability to reduce a 100-point restoration down to about 80!). No, this one is about owning a fabulous piece of Automotive Americana and simply enjoying the experience of having the best.

The Roadsters are rare enough but you won’t find any close to the condition that this one is. Beautiful car.

I agree this is as good as it gets, but 100 K is a lot of money, even for the BEST. They say there is a butt for every seat. That could be true in this case if you can just find it.

What’s today’s cost of restoration you can get one for free and end up with more than that in it. Most people don’t realize this until they’ve done a restoration. Yeah you can do it yourself they say but very few ever get them completely done like this.
