20K Mile Shortbed: 1980 Toyota 4×4 Pickup

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Bidding is already above $22,000, and the reserve remains unmet for this gorgeous 1980 Toyota Pickup 4×4. The reason for that being it has under 18,000 original miles and is perhaps the most desirable year and configuration for a vintage Toyota pickup – so yes, the bidding should go higher to bring it home. It’s fitted with the factory solid front axle and the old-school circular headlights, two things that fans of the classic Toyota pickup truck love to find in a pickup. You’ll find this low mileage specimen here on eBay and located in Fenton, Missouri.

The Toyota is loaded to the gills, clearly, the top-shelf model when it rolled off the lot in 1980. That’s the thing about special cars and trucks: the more gussied up they were when new, the more desirable they become as they age. The three-spoke sports steering wheel is a must-have, and the center armrest has been upgraded with a storage big and cupholders with an attractive (fake) wood veneer. The dash also sports the optional (fake) wood inlays, and the wall to wall blue carpeting appears clean and uncut. The seller notes the truck was previously on long-term display at a Florida Toyota dealer.

The same Wisconsin family-owned this Toyota up through 2012, and they were the ones who bought it new – and the truck comes with its original sales documents from a Wisconsin Toyota dealer as proof. The options list is quite generous, and seemingly all of the features remain with the truck: weather package, power steering, window package, tailgate panel, tilt steering column, and ultra mirrors, along with dealer-installed options including rustproofing, undercoating, chrome step bumper, floor mats, and driver and passenger lumbar supports

The 20R is an extremely long-lived mill, and with under 20,000 miles, this one is not broken in whatsoever. Of course, the next owner isn’t likely to log any serious mileage – there’s a reason this was parked as a static display piece, after all – so it’s likely to go into a collection where it will get some occasional exercise and nothing more. No major maintenance history is noted in the description, but it likely didn’t need much, either, considering it’s a Toyota with new-car mileage. I wouldn’t be surprised to see bidding reach $30K, and any number below that price tag seems like a deal.

Gawd, I had (all 4WDs) a ’79, ’81, and an ’85 solid front axle 4Runner. All used and abused by yours truly, and now they’re goldmines. Rugged and dependable as you can get.

Great specimen ! Just love the look of those round sealed beam lights. Not very powerful, but well geared and always ran well. My jaw dropped when I saw she was in Wisconsin. As nice as these were, here in Ohio, rarely were these not completely rotted after 5-7 years of regular use with roached dash pads and seats. Time capsule to be shown only. Never to be used as intended. Love it !

Gorgeous truck. I’m actually partial to the square headlights on the later models but this one is real sharp.

$23,400 with almost 4 days to go?
I hope the new owner takes care of it & drives it,
& not put it away & just look at it.

If I was in the market for a new Ranger or Colorado I would definitely go with this instead. In 2 years the new truck will be worth less than this one.

All it needs is a NOS dealer A/C kit and then I’d freshen up the rustproofing and go play in the snow and sand.

I had this year model but loaded with a diesel. It rusted fast and I sold it at 3 years old because it was still sellable. I loved that truck. It didn’t smoke, was quiet, and reved and pulled like a gas motor.

I had to inspect the ebay pics with this low mile claim by motor exotica. The front seat replacement is suspect to me and the inside bed repaint is a good job (check the open liftgate handle pic) . It is excellent and beyond belief. I think mine had rusty tailgate hinges on delivery and the chrome on the bumper was pealing in a year.

Beautiful truck. The problem is it’s too nice really drive it. Haven’t seen a truck from this era that wasn’t rotted out in a long time. In 1985 you would have seen one like this with a homemade wooden bed and a 2×6 plank for a rear bumper.

Back in the day American cars were notorious for needing lots of dealer attention after the sale. My first non-American car with this exact same pick up. Same color same stripes. Everything. As I was wrapping up the deal I said to the salesman, so do I start making a list of all the things that are wrong with it and then bring it back in a week or so and get them fixed? He just looked at me kind of oddly and said you won’t be bringing it back and it won’t have anything wrong with it. I just laughed at him. Four years later it had never been back to the dealer for anything other than an oil change. Since then American cars Have got a lot more dependable but nothing like that 1980 Toyota pick up. Absolutely one of the best cars I ever owned and lots of fun to drive

I was going to say the front seat does not look stock. I had an 81 SR5 and it was loaded, the seats did not resemble this truck.

Great looking truck. My brother in law had one that he did not replace the timing chain at 100 K, like I told him, because it was making noise. Very common thing that happens with the 20R engine, is the timing chain wears a hole in the water jacket and wipes out the engine. It happened at 110 K to my brother in law. Truck was a rust bucket by 1987 anyway. Too much money to pay for a 40 year old truck imho, but it is not my money, so if someone wants to own this example, they have to spend the benjamins. Not sure what the reserve is or if it will be met.

In 1981, I was a 16 year old school leaver who worked for a small Toyota dealer in Heywood, Gredter Manchester, England.

We had 5 of those things in stock and couldn’t shift them at all.

We ended up painting one ip in a cheap effort to make it look custom.

    Still didn’t sell.
